Who caught some walleyes this weekend? We had a blizzard again, reinforcing the fact that Wisconsin weather will change about every 5 minutes or so.

Anyone catch some fish over the weekend?

Went to Red Wing with Jason Smith Saturday. Launched Jason's Tuffy on the WI side, and proceeded to motor up to the dam. Almost immediately, amongst the 40 or so boats, I hit a small sauger on the west side of the channel brreak on a jig and minnow. We caught several below-legal saugers over the next few hours. Jason caught a coule shorts on plastic, too.

Around 10:00, we decided to try anothe spot, and to get out of the wind for a bit. Again, I immediatley stuck a fish. This time, a 14" walleye. Encouraged by this, and a couple fish that I missed, we worked this 100 yd area for quite a while, maybe too long. As I said, we missed a couple, including 2 nicer fish.

Around 1:00 PM, we motored back to the dam area, while we at our lunch. We decided to work deeper, and as our good minnows were pretty much gone, Jason put two smaller minnows on his jig, and sent it to the bottom. Immediately, a fish crushed his offering, and seconds later I netted a nice, fat 17" sauger. On our next drift, he got another 17", and then I got a 16"er, in between several smaller fish.

Had a good time, and didn't get too cold in the crazy weather. We had it all. Snow, rain, sleet, hail, freezing rain, plenty of wind, and even a little sunshine! Had a great meal Saturday night of fresh beer batter sauger! Yummy! Roads were ice covered Sunday morning, so we decided not to go back. Thanks Jason!

I was up in the Montello area, the river was about four feet high and the water was moving at a good rate. Fished fri. night (nothing), Sat. we caught 1 15" and 7-8 small eyes. The fish were definately there but not biting as we threw the whole tackle box at them. Forgot my foot control for the trolling motor, and I called up a buddy to help out with the situation, he meet me half way from Milw. to give me my foot control that I left at home. At 11:30 fri night I met him at johnson creek. Thats what I call a true friend. The guy had to work at 6:00 am on saturday and went well out of his way. Gosh do I owe him big time, even though we did not catch too many fish, but needed to use the trolling motor to stay on the spots we were fishing.

Just curious as to where around Montello you fished... in Buffalo or downstream towards Puckaway?

We fished from montello dam to the lake. The best spot was where the old dam was removed. Marked plenty of fish in all the deep holes (6-28').

Those are prime examples of fish that need to be released. Nice, fat, pre-spawn females.
Muskies aren't the only fish that should be CPR'd.

Wrongo, Confused. One of those fish was a male, and it wasn't the smallest one! And seeing as how those were the only three fish I've ever kept out of that system, out of the hundreds I've caught, I don't feel bad at all about having fresh fish for supper that night.

Shep.

Somebody has to introduce you to the Microsoft Picture it 2001/2002 program to downsize those pictures. Didn't really need to know how big those walleyes were, as they were the same size on my PC screen.

Dan,

Maybe he did downsize them!! If so, I'd sure like some coordinates to find that honey hole!

WE,

I did resize them, from about 800K, down to a little less than the 100K allowed to post. I could make them smaller, but then Confused would be taller than the fish, and wouldn't know what to say.

Jack, as far as location, that hole was directly in the middle, maybe 200 yards down from the dam. There is a square culvert straight to the east. Goes from 20' down to 26' or so. We got them right at the break.
