Copied from the WBSA website - www.westernbasinsportfishingassocaition.com club website http://westernbasinsportfishingassociation.com/page6.html results The first WBSA walleye tournament was held at the Black River Wharf in Lorain, Ohio. It was scheduled for June 19th, but because of bad weather, it was postponed until June 20th. The weather was great with low winds. Although fish were marked in many places, the bite was pretty slow. We had a total of 18 teams with 17 hopefulls entering the pot for big fish. This was a total of 58 people fishing. There were 3-2 man teams, 10-3 man teams, 3-4 man teams, and 2 5- man teams. Takeoff went very well with Steve Carlson giving the rules as the boaters idled their way down the river. All teams were back in by check in time. 10 teams weighed 5 fish each, 3 teams weighed 3 fish each, and 5 teams weighed no fish. More Details... Thanks to everyone that fished the event and to all of the sponsors that donated to the event. I believe each team that stayed around until the end of the event received at least one item that was doanted by the sponsors. We had some really generous tackle donations. It was a tough bite for sure. The top 4 placing teams fished out in an area known as "the hole" which is north of Cleveland. 33-35 miles at 30 degree compass heading from Lorain. Jay Parks & I fished this area on Friday afternoon and caught 4 eyes in about an hour and a half with 3 of the 4 being over 7 pounds. Decided this was the place to go and really expected to handle 15-20 eyes on Sunday. We started out wiht a nice 7# eye 10 minutes into the day on a size 1 dispey set at 105 feet pulling a firetiger worm harness at 2.4 mph. This was a double willow bladed harness designed for running faster than conventional harnesses. Had another shot on this setup 20 minutes later but we lost it. Caught some nice (8-10 pound) steelhead in the next couple hours but no walleye for a while. Then found some active eyes and popped two on a 3 setting dipsey back 165 feet on a chrome full size Michigan Stinger Mixed Vegies spoon. Another dry spell and I made a move back to where I had marked fish on the way out about 2 miles from where we had been fishing. With 40 minutes to fish we were stuck at 3 walleye but managed to pop 2 more on harnesses on the 2 setting dipsey back 105. I know that Rich Benoit's third place Lotta Gray team caught all their fish on dipseys and spoons. I believe 135 feet back on a 3 setting with Mixed Vegies was their best. The winner pulled most (maybe all) of his fish on worm harnesses. Steve Carlson | |||
