Location: Essexville, MI./Saginaw Bay. | Heres a story that might make you feel better, even if you don't like catfish. Seems this particular kitty bit off more than he could chew and was paying the price with certain death. That was before this man and a sharp kitchen knife saved his life.

It seems odd to me that a cat tried to bite the ball.
More likely, and I'd be willing to place a dime on the scenario that a "Sportsman" caught the cat while fishing for something else, got pizzed, or thought it was funny to ram the ball in the fish's mouth and set it adrift.....
A quick look at the pictures will show the circumference of the ball is much larger than that catfish's bite radius, it's jaw is horribly overextended and the ball is crammed too firmly in place.
I have seen "Sportsmen" do worse things to non walleyes that are silly enough to bite the wrong lure.
Happily the fish was rescued by a true sprotsman, as, I for one, welcome the awesome battle a cat can provide! |

I myself don't mind the cat fight but hate taking the hooks out of them every since I saw a PWT fisherman on the yarcraft team get stuck and spend 4 days in the hospital on an antibiotic drip. OUCH! | I have to agree with Ralph on this one. There is NO WAY that fish tried to eat that ball all by it's self. May the Fish Gods curse the angler who did such a childish thing, and leave his baits hanging without a bite for as long as he shall live.
Kudos to the "sportsman" who appreciates and respects all creatures great and small, and saved this fish from a sufferable death. May he have successful fishing trips for the rest of his life!

Location: Essexville, MI./Saginaw Bay. | I'm inclined to agree that the catfish might have been left in that fasion by a less than spotsman-like individual. Yet, I've seen, heard of and seen mounted Pike and Bass that have tried to eat another fish (most often the same specie) almost the same size as themselves.
The reservoir in question was a private one, in the middle of a subdivision. So I'm thinking kids with no real cats left to pour gas on and ignite, might have caught and left the fish in that state of affairs. Ditto, for the guy playing good samaritan.
