I sent an e-mail to a DNR bud who just know got back to me with the answer. So I'm posting the answer. Of course this will never superseede any rules or regulations tournaments have or deem unlawfull to use during their particular tounaments. Dan. Here's the reply finally to your lure modification question. It looks like you are good to go on Great Lakes waters. There are certain weight issues that affect its legality on rivers and maybe other inland locations in the fall (weigh it to find out). See attached reply from our law people. I suggest you print out their reply and keep it handy if there is ever any question. -Dave Date: Tue, 06 Jul 2004 12:01:50 -0400 From: "David Purol" To: "David Fielder" "Nicholas Heary" Subject: Re: Fishing gear question Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Disposition: inline A legal fishing lure with the stipulation Nick made regarding weight. If it exceeds one ounce, (it would) be unlawful to use on (all streams), including tributaries to the Great Lakes, during the period August 1 - May 31 except for the St. Marys, St. Clair and Detroit Rivers. But not in the Great Lakes proper --Dave >>> Nicholas Heary 07/06/2004 >>> Looks okay to me if it's less than one ounce. If over one ounce it may only be legal on the Great Lakes and not on some river systems during certain times of the year. I'll forward to our legal section for the final word. Dave Purol: Do you have any concerns with this? >>> David Fielder 06/28/04 01:59PM >>> Nick: Can you please reply to this person (See attached)? He is a charter operator that fishes Saginaw Bay a lot. He has developed a weighted lure that he wants to use and maybe market. He's looking to confirm its legality. His message includes a photo. Thanks. -Dave ******************************************************* Dave Fielder Fisheries Research Biologist Michigan DNR Alpena Great Lakes Fisheries Research Station 160 E. Morning Cuz, I was wondering if you have had the same problem as I have with these weight's. We lost 3 big wallete's the other day when the back split ring broke and the harness was gone. I've never had any do this before, but had three in one day. I figure I'll have to change rings and snaps on all of them now.

Did catch our first walleye on my modification on my last trip though. I knew the walleye had the keel itself in his mouth, when I seen the flash of the harness behind him 3 feet as he came in. I did hear about the problem though, and it's tough to determine just how strong or weak split rings are without having actually placed them on the rig yourself. Some split rings are natorious for straightening out under stress. If replacing them, I'd use XX strong split rings. I did think their (pinch clip) on the back was a pain in the butt to get open and attach the harness as well, but could see the advantage of it's design for (NOT) wearing on your harness line. Capt. Dan - If I'm not mistaken, the question regarding legality was not in the modification itself, but in running the modified sinker in tandem with a harness (ie. does this constitute two lures or one lure). Has this question also been laid to rest?? Regards - xxl

The legality of having more than one hooked attractor per line. And the MWT rules being broke when doing so. I made it clear in my e-mail to Dave, that this was a sinker that was to be run in front of and in tandom with another 3 hooked attractor/harness. The tandom part I was already sure was legal in Michigan. The MWT part, I was unsure rather the guy who showed me this modification used it in pre-fishing or actually in the tournament itself. This part was actually none of my personal business. He was showing me a way to legally catch the fish that seemed more attracted to the weight versus the baited harness, and I was all ears. But, I'm sure Dave would have forwarded my original e-mail with picture of rig along with the explanation of how it was being used to his law enforcment buds for determination.
