Location: Rhinelander | There are some pigs in the weeds here on the Goon right now, but cranking them is near impossible because of the Pike. Is there a method you use to catch walleyes in the heavy cabbage in 5' or less? I think I will have to move around alot to contact fish, as they sem to be scattered all over the place. I got a 30.25, and there were several in that class caught yesterday by others in camp, but only one per boat. All were in the same area, too.

Member Posts: 340 Location: McFarland, WI | We use a small colorado blade(2or3) followed by 6 small beads and a #4 snell hook which can be weedless, tipped with a piece of crawler. !2-18 inches ahead of that we fix an egg sinker or barrel sinker(usually 1/8-1/4 oz) between bobber stop and bead and barrel swivel. It will pull through weeds.( See Dean Cliftons Lake Erie web site under mayfly rig) Other thing is single blade musky spinner bait tipped with crawler pulled steady through weeds. It will pull free of cabbage with a steady pulling action and a stiff rod. You'll get toothy critters with this one also. Otherwise a veggie jig but I like a little flash and vibration to wake em up. Member Posts: 284 | BeFishin's technique would be a good one to try. I watched an in fisherman show about a month ago when they were using that exact technique and ripping the bait then let it drop. They caught some giant fish too on a MN lake. Walleyes on 6" plastics? I guess they are there for one reason.

Steve, Get out the big plastics. The 6" Power Pogeys or Shad style plastics. Fish them on a 3/4 ounce Owner jig head. They run through the weeds well. Also, use Fireline because it cuts through the weeds well. Cast the jig out, let it hit bottom and do ten quick cranks, pause for a second and ten cranks again, and then let hit bottom again on a pause. If you hit weeds, a quick snap of the rod will clear it and continue on. This method is hands down the best for walleyes in weeds this time of year. You will have no doubts when one hits it. They whack it like a crank bait. See you in Cleveland, Charlie
