Just was wonder what you all think about why fish get off when fishing with spinners. Last night on bago, I had the board go back about 5-10 feet then almost under. While reeling in with a nice steady slow retreive the fish got off. This happened about five time on different spinners. All my hooks are sharp and I thought I has doing everything correct.?! Anyone have any pointers when fishing with spinners?

You do know that they were walleyes right? 'cause nothing else comes unbuttoned, they make you reel them all the way in. LOL Jury is still out on that question.

A couple off times the board just vanished, when I started to reel then you could just feel them get off. I am at a loss.

Are your spinners home made I have found sometimes I have used to small of a hook on my spinners so now I am experimenting with varies of sizes seeing to see if this makes a difference.

Also I have started to wait on when I pick rod up and check on the hook set of the fish in addition I am no studing how approch the rod after a board is going back. in end I fee that doing some things different it will give you a better chance on hooking a fish that is still nibbling up on worm.

They are cats.
They have the whole unit in there mouth.
Till it lets the spinner loose there are not hooks in it.

Thats a good point Rich. Did the board bob like a bobber? Disappearing under and popping back up?If so it was a cat. It uses it's whole body - like a snake - as it swims through the water, putting more force into its surges.

There was a huge school of catfish out about 2.o miles in front of the mouth of oshkosh. I hooked into one prefishing and caught it on a dj jr about 13 ft down.It was the second cat this year over 25lbs ..There was no way i was going to loose one of my fav dj jr the fish took 20 min to get in and it was a 30lber.I went back to investigate right where i caught it and found 20-30 long skinny big marks. Its amazing what you find out there and never imaged that was that many cats schooled up.

Walleyes, big enough ones will take a board underwater also. While fishing Sturgeon bay last year, my partner started calling the boards "bobbers" by the end of the day; "Outside bobber is under again!"

There are a number of issues when fishing with spinners/crawler harnesses, that affect good hook penetration.

One is speed, generally you are traveling at a slower speed, and thereby your hooks are not traveling through the water as fast as with a crank bait lowering the penetrating power of the hook.

Two is the angle of the line, especially if you are using snap weights. When you combine this with the slower speed and the stretch of mono, it takes a longer time to get good hook penetration.

Three when using harnesses the hooks are pulling straight through the water, as opposed to the side-to-side motion of a crank bait AND the leverage caused by the bill of the crank bait. As side note regarding crank baits, the leverage factor can work against you the closer you get the fish to the boat and the bigger/longer the crank (Thunderstick vs. Junior Thunderstick).

Try adding a stinger to your spinners! Many times we have caught walleyes just on the stinger hook.

Hmmmm I'll agree with Stacker, they were walleyes, you never hear of someone losing a big sheepshead at the back of the boat. hahahaha

Possiblely one of the most important things to a crawler harness is the knot used to tie it. IMO. It's imperative to use a knot that keeps the hook straight when it's being pulled, thus causing a better hookset.

I'm still on the fence for how important hook size is. I've used 4's 2's and 1's all with success.

Good Luck

I am speak from the fishing on bago we had the friday before the RCL leage.
Board bobbers added up to well over 50 lbs taken home for 6 fish.(cats)
Only 2nd time fishing this year, 1st trip to bago.

We have used many board bobbers on Erie.(Walleyes, and big cats there)
But not one of the fish that took it under was a walleye on bago, that day.
We only had 1 get off that sunk the bobber.
One kept the bobber down for like 15 mins and reminded me of my biggest eye on erie, but was the biggest cat of the day.
Passing the board under the boat a few times.
Every hook up with a bobber was hoped to be a Wall hanging walleye all the way in till seen, but alas not one was a eye.
The 24 took a it down for a few mins, but nothing like the cats.
I know they are out there.

Ok, totals.
Ran 7 lines, with crawler harnesses.
19 walleyes, up to 24".
Only 1 white bass.
Handful of very small sheep, much less than normal.
6 catfish, with 2 being monsters.
3 little eyes, that will be walleyes next year.
Best 5 would have been 18lbs+or -.

Now to tick everyone off this was a meat run.
15 eater walleyes went home.
3 eyes over 20+" were released.

When the waves layed down, we had to feed them and then set the hook to get the finicky biters that hit after that.
Some fish just swam with the bait right up to the boat and you never knew they were there till you checked the bait.

Reminded me like Lake Mich. shakers, need to speed up every now and then to check all the boards at the same time.

Sometimes one has a day where one can't seem to pin them up for anything, other days everything stays stuck. I'm not sure there is an answer to that.
