Subject: New Tactics

Going on the yearly walleye fishing trip next week to northern Ontario. Every year we go to the same small river system and fish the same 5 or 6 weedbeds with jigs and every year those same 5 or 6 weed beds produce a good number of fish between the 14 and 20 inch range. Looking for new tactics to maybe find a few more big fish. There are pockets of deep water throughout the river and branch lakes off the river. Fish at night? What bait at night? Move and try vertical jigging the deep water? Any opinions would be appreciated..

Reminds me of a Moose Hunt a few years ago where we hunted mornings and evenings, and fished walleyes by day. My partner for the trip was a regular to this camp and all he wanted to do was troll a certain part of the lake - boring!

But one cold rainy day had me out alone in the middle of the shallow bay where the camp was shorelined (think it was 22 feet deep). Drifting along with a single hook in the nose of a crawler, one little red bead on the line for adornment, and a slip weight stopped by a barrel swivel a few feet up from the bait, to get it to the bottom.

Caught many walleyes that day with a few going over 20 inches which were much larger than the 13-16 inchers we were catching trolling his favorite spot.

So that's my advice!:-)

Yeah....For years we have talked about 1000 different ways to find big fish but somehow it is easier to talk about getting away from the norm rather than actually finding another method. This year it it will be done if I have to do it myself. Thanks for the tip. I have a spot that is acutally a stair stepped flat I will try that technique on. Weed bed at about 8 ft steps down to 13 then down to 25. I will just keep going until I find out how deep the fish are. Good advice

Location: Rhinelander
I fished Minaki for a few years searching for 'the one' muskie, and fished 'eyes a bit also. I did very well cranking the weedlines, points, and rock reefs with deep divers, and over the tops of the weeds with shallow divers. If there are current breaks there, fish those hard with cranks as well. Fun, lots of fish and multi specie, and can produce some big fish. Use a light seven strand leader to eliminate bite offs from pike.
