Member Posts: 540 Location: Milw, WI | Ok, real slow around here so time for every one to laugh with me. I know My boat will float full of water....... We ran out of the butte launch and were killing the whites, and walleyes.(lots under size limit back then) Four of us in the boat. Well when no more white bass would fit in the live well, I said we have to head in. Plan was to get the white bass over to a buddies and toss them in the chest freezer and get back out to the hot bite. Well we had only one cooler to haul the fish in and there was more than that to move. So we went and got 5 gallon buckets from my buddy to haul them in. Well it took a little while to come up with five buckets. We left 2 guys sitting in the boat at the launch so every thing should be ok right. Well we pull up and the one guy is no where to be found and the other dude is a sleep , with his feet up on the gunnel. The boat is full of water right up to ankle deep. I left the live well pump running full blast to see if some fish would stay alive. Well one white basses head was stuck in the over flow hole. We woke the kid up and he jumped and stuck his feet right in to the nice bath tub of cool water. You should have seen his face. Well your already wet, so turn off the live well pump would ya. Turn on the bilge pump well your at it, pump started. The missing guy walks up, and sees this and can not belive his eyes. He went to fish off shore for awhile while we were gone. So we unloaded the the live well to the buckets and hauled them over and tossed the whole works in a chest freezer so we can get back to fishing. Get back and there is still water over the floor. So I take my shoes off, roll up the cuffs, and take her to open water. Pull the plug and run her til the water is out lean over and pop the plug back in. Head back to get the guys, cause the fish are still calling. We head out and after all the fun, we never got another fish to keep that day and it went up to the 80's and we were melting. Head in , pull out and go to get the fish. Well the 2 guys said they had a cooler to take fish home in, ya a 6 pack cooler. Held his 1 leagle walleye and 6 white bass, away they went home. Left me with 80+ whites and 2 walleyes. I will never again keep that many again. And I learned that my boat floats filled with water.

Back in the guiding days I fished with a couple of guys who were keeping a lot of hard biting white bass. One of the guys asked me how many he thought they should keep. I said,"As many as you think you can clean in no more then an hour". He said, "OH, you don't clean our fish?" I said I would clean their limits of walleyes and help them clean some but asked them to think about the situation, fish for 8 - 10 hours, the pre-fishing routine in time, then clean what could be 400 fish?? I suggested one of the cleaning people .$25 ea at the time and they said that "they knew how to clean fish". They continued to keep fish figuring filling one 60 Qt cooler would be about right. I showed them how to filet a white bass, taking care of about a dozen fish and went to meet some people for dinner. Four hours later I find them still cleaning fish, and not really happy about it. I pulled up a stool and finished the last 30 or so fish while they sat with me and talked about the great day and how sick of cleaning fish they were and how many spines a white bass had. I was proud that these guys were not going to waste one single fish. (I told them if you keep 300, you clean 300). Had some guys toss out a cooler full when I first started guiding and I didn't like it. I tell you I never saw a man with a knife happier to see me. Edited by Joel "Doc" Kunz 8/22/2004 11:13 PM
