Message from a friend today....

Received a note from Billy Ward that his father, fishing legend Virgil Ward, died yesterday at the age of 93. Throughout Virgil's life there have been numerous honors bestowed. He is a member of the Ozark Fisherman's Hall of Fame, the International Fishing Hall of Fame and the National Fresh Water Fishing Hall of Fame. He was the recipient of fishing's highest recognition, the Dolphin Award, and was included in the Living Legends of American Sportfishing.

I had forgotten about Ol' Virgil. Watching his shows was always a good time. It would be nice to see some of those old shows again. The younger generation could see how it was done in much simpiler times. I'll hoist one for Virgil tonight.

Virgil opened the door, broke new ground and set the pattern for alot of fishing shows over the years. And that old saying about not having the days fishing counted agains't your time here on earth must be true, as 93 years would qualify as quite a full life. We should all be so lucky.

I remember seeing his TV shows in Chicago in the late 50's and 60's. Black and White, very grainy pictures. Yet, now that this topic makes me think, I remember Virgil talking techniques about how, where and why. Certainly a legend, althought somewhat fogotten. 93, a long time on the water! Mike

Now I think I remember" Championship fishing with Virgil Ward."

Is that the right name for his show?

I was just a wiper snapper back then.

I remember hanging on his every word.

He was the first show I saw using lead head jigs back then.

You will be missed, rest in a fishermans paradise.
