Member Posts: 2393 Location: Waukesha Wisconsin | Thanks Cabela’s VISA I got one of those calls yesterday that we all fear. The Cabela’s VISA security department called me and asked me about some suspicious charges to my credit card. What impressed me the most was that it was just three charges and none of them were for real large amounts of money. The largest charge was for $148.00. Sure enough, someone got a hold of my credit card numbers and made some purchases. All of these purchases were made in the last 6 days and it appears that they caught this long before the thieves could really take advantage of my misfortune. I’m not sure how they track my transactions but I’m sure glad that they do. Cabela’s Visa did I great job in taking care of me and stopping this whole situation before it caused me great harm and money. I was treated great and they were all very understanding and professional. It’s another buyer beware situation. These thieves had to get my number from either an internet transaction or from one of my frequent gas station stops while guiding or doing a tournament. Be careful out there.

| Glad you didn't get taken Sunshine. However there is the other side of the VISA security situation-I went to Canada this year and charged gas at International Falls, crossed the border and attempted to charge licquor in Ft. Francis. The VISA security people placed a stop on my card because it had crossed an international border, I couldn't use my Cabelas card the entire time I was in Canada. They called my home to varify the charges and my wife informed them that I was on a fishing trip in Canada but they still didn't allow the card to be used. After getting home and having a discussion with the Cabelas VISA rep it was determined that the only way I could use my card when crossing into Canada was to inform them prior to the trip that I would be using the card outside the US. Call me old-fashioned but I still believe in a bit of privacy and I'm not inclined to report my vacation schedule to anyone outside of my family. I was shocked that they could have followed the trail of charges from my home across two states and not realized the card was being used in a patterned fashion. I don't have a solution but the "security" issue can become a big brother problem. | |||

My wife deals with large sums of money being transferred amonst banks, large companies and her company. The horror stories I have heard about similar fraud but at the corporate level would make you......cancel all your credit cards and bank accounts (not really but pretty bold of some deceitful people out there).....WM

Member Posts: 2393 Location: Waukesha Wisconsin | Thanks for the support Lund Dude, when they asked for possble suspects your name was at the top of the list. Asking for a cash advance in 50 one dollar bills tipped your hand. They already did a background search on ya' buddy.............. you have an interesting past................... I'm surprised that you have not had any visits from the local sherrif.

It seems everyone worrys about having their visa info stolen by using the computer, when actually it is much easier to steal it at any retailer you use your cards at. One measure I always take when using my card to purchase gas is when ever possible, I use the card at the pump, and not inside the store. If I need something from inside I try to use cash there. It isn't always feasible, but it sure does reduce the number of opportunities to have someone get my info. Another thing to avoid is any and all "automatic" payment systems, regardless if they are connected to your credit cards, or your bank!

| I have "Got the Call" from Cabelas Visa twice now. They were just verifying charges. Nothing was fradulent however. Good to know they are keeping a close eye on things. I'm a happy camper. Those Cabelas points sure add up fast! | |||

| I've been called by them numerous times. But I use the card a lot; I'm planning on getting a new 14' boat next spring with my points. If you don't already have one, you need one. It's one of the best cards to have for a fisherman/woman. | |||
