Member Posts: 376 Location: Menominee MI, In Da UP Eh? | Well it was range time yesterday to sight in the 7mm mag for next weeks deer season. A friend of mine came with as well as both my boys. This time of the year the range is staffed on the weekends by the local Police. They are there to assist and have bench rests spotting scopes and the like on each station to aid in sighting in. The young officer that was spotting for me repoted that, on my first shot the gun was off the paper at 200 yards. Here is why.... Due mostly to me shooting out of the bench rest and not having a good enough grip on the fore end of the rifle while squeezing off the first shot. (Can anyone, or is it possible to, squeeze off a shot with a savage with it's 23 pound pull, trigger?)  Anyway, on that first shot the gun jumped up to high and the scope caught me square in the right lens of my glasses, and in doing so the bridge of the glasses brused my nose! Ya think the shot was off the paper? Frankly, I'd be amazed if it wasn't! So with the next shell I actually held on to the gun and the shot was 4 inches right, 6 inches high at 200 yds...and the damn thing kissed my eybrow this time. Has there been any mention that I hate bench rests? At least that one anyway... In talking with the officer, I mentioned the rifle had only been bore sighted and my purpose here was to make sure it was on target for the hunt. (There was this big ambition to replace the scope with a better one. And in my zealousness to do so I removed this scope before the new one was even ordered. Which still hadn't been done and won't get done before the season.) He suggested to start at the 25 yard target, and to move the elevation and windage a specified number of clicks. Later that day my friend tells me that while I was dufusing, (doo-fuss-ing) um, shooting the rifle and pounding the scope off my noggin, my spotter was chuckling with the other officer about me getting bitch slapped by my own gun. The younger fellow came back to the bench after my finally finding a comfy position with that bench rest and was ready to fire at the 25 yard target, which through my scope, I was sure the late Ray Charles could have done. As the next shot rang out it was eveident that my gun and I had come to an tenative agreement with this bench rest and no one would have to get hurt. The shot was touching the dead center of the target, just a wee bit high and to the right. The officer wasn't laughing anymore, but there was a lot of smiling on my behalf as I said, let's try her at 50 yards! Two shots later, with all in the center diamond, it was time to move out to the big boy target, 100 yds. The officer was actually a lot of help and his estimation on how many clicks up and right it would take to be dead on were, well, dead on. Evey shot in the center diamond, though none as close as the Ray Charles shot. The officer said, "Well I guess you have it sighted in now, no sense wasting anymore shells. Laughing a bit Itold him there were still a few shells left and there was plenty of time. Andthe cost of 25 shells won't break anyone's bank... A few more down into the 100 yd target with no bench rest and a few at the 200 yard stop convinced me of the ability to sufficiently stop anything Whitetailish in a rather humane fashion. It is amazing to me how much safer a rifle is without a bench rest under it! At least for me that is. And, best of all my Savage and I have a new understanding. No more jumping around with the rifle stuck to my eye via the scope,( ie: it doesn't bite me) and it hits what it is pointed at, or I toss it in the pond 30 feet from my blind! LOL!!
