Member Posts: 2393 Location: Waukesha Wisconsin | Peta is at it again..... http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/F/FISH_EMPATHY?SITE=WIMIL&SECT... HERE'S 2 QUOTES: "No one would ever put a hook through a dog's or cat's mouth," said Bruce Friedrich, PETA's director of vegan outreach. "Once people start to understand that fish, although they come in different packaging, are just as intelligent, they'll stop eating them." "Fish are so misunderstood because they're so far removed from our daily lives," said Karin Robertson, 24, the Empathy Project manager and daughter of an Indiana fisheries biologist. "They're such interesting, fascinating individuals, yet they're so incredibly abused." Edited by Sunshine 11/17/2004 9:44 AM

| I think somebody should take all the things these idiots say and make a comedy show. You know...to put PETA in it's proper perspective. The stuff they come up with is incredibly ignorant to the point where they need and deserve some serious public derision. We have "right to hunt and fish" laws in my state. Hopefully all states will, soon. | |||

Member Posts: 2393 Location: Waukesha Wisconsin | I'd like to know if MY taxes are going toward these ridiculous studies. Let's spend 20 million dollars to see if cabbage feel pain when they are unnaturally plucked from their surroundings and friends. oh the horror of it all.

| My opinion on the topic (and I know that it will be unpopular) is as follows: Ever hear the phrase, "There's no such thing as bad publicity?' I believe it is PETA's mantra. By acknowledging their antics/tactics in forums such as this, I believe anglers/hunters/sportsmen/others are actually helping PETA accomplish one of its main goals - - to raise "awareness." Shock tactics work. They draw attention. They create a buzz. The more attention/buzz created, the better in their (PETA's) mind. These folks aren't stupid - they just appear to be (dumb like a fox my grandfather would say). In receiving more "press" (in any form), by definition, their message (no matter how twisted and obscene it may be) will reach more eyes and ears. The more people you touch, the better your chances to persuade at least a few. This is how movements start - small. Please understand - I am not a PETA supporter. Just the opposite. Yet I think it's important to consider (reconsider?) the most effective way to counter their tactics. I don't have all of the answers, and am open to ideas. These folks need to be opposed, but opposed where it counts and where we can truely make a difference - and ignored elsewhere. Why be an unwitting mouthpiece for an organization we so vehemently oppose? Just one man's opinion. Thoughts? Regards, xxl | |||

Member Posts: 2393 Location: Waukesha Wisconsin | Your comment: "These folks need to be opposed, but opposed where it counts and where we can truly make a difference - and ignored elsewhere. Why be an unwitting mouthpiece for an organization we so vehemently oppose? Just one man's opinion. Thoughts? " My opinion: People can not be opposed to something they are not aware of. Making people aware of these foolish antics on boards like this do no harm IMHO. I'd be shocked if anyone (at least registered) on this board support this initiative. I still support my subject heading for this thread........ Know what your enemies are up to! On the other hand............... I was told once, that we should not visit their web site to see what craziness they propose because they use the number of hits on their sites to show support. If they get 10,000 hits on this subject they tell people they have 10,000 supporters............ I can not validate this! I have a hard time with your hypothesis that if you ignore them they will go away. Nazism was once a crazy nuisance that many ignored.

| Dennis - Nowhere did I mean to imply that you were wrong and I am right. Thus the postscript of "One man's opinion only." Never hurts to look at an issue from a fresh angle (and at a minimum, mine has got to be considered fresh). Everyone's entitled to their own view - and mine stands. How long before someone weighs in with the tired "People Eating Tasty Animals" comment? Regards xxl | |||

Member Posts: 2393 Location: Waukesha Wisconsin | XXL, I agree with you that it never hurts to look at an issue from a fresh angle (and yes, yours has to be considered fresh). Everyone IS entitled to their own view and I applaud you for not being afraid to go out on the edge. I will also ALWAYS support you for having a right for being wrong I didn't take your comment personal and please take mine with a grain of salt.

![]() Member Posts: 2680 Location: Essexville, MI./Saginaw Bay. | I think one of PETA's biggest mistakes is accusing sportsman of all kinds, for not having a caring heart for virtually any of the animals/fish we harvest. Compare the money spent by sportsmen just yearly compared to theirs, to keep wildlife and their habitats thriving. Organizations like Ducks Unlimited who have bought and preserved Millions of acres of wet lands in the US and Canada for not just Duck hunters but all wet land wildlife. Pheasants Forever, that have paid farmers millions to set aside filter strips along side their crops and drainages that keep the farm crop water runoff cleaner, and benefit both Pheasants and all kinds of wildlife. Trout Unlimited, that restock desimated fish populations, restores rivers banks along with stream and river habitat, that in turn restores spawning habitat and gives the whole river ecosystem a boost. And the lists go on. (IMPO) Take all the PETA's members who have never once interacted in any of these sports or seen the good these organizations do for the wildlife, and your left with City Living, liberal vegetarians, with misplaced feelings for animals/fish that would be in a lot more trouble, without us heartless sportsmen around. I'm sorry, but I'm sure virtualy every one of these people are in that misinformed group. Edited by walleye express 11/18/2004 10:32 AM
