what is the best trolling motor for tournament fishing a wide range of places, i am leaning towards a minnkota 74 or 80 powerdrive with a auto pilot and copilot, or a motorguide PTS with auto depth tracking, or a minnkota maxxum. (bowmounts) any imput or suggestions appreciated, thanks, steve.

I ue a Minn Kota 24 volt autopilot. It's a great motor. Response spped is good, great power, and easy to use. The bracket is positive and solid, and the shaft on the motor is unbreakable and won't bend if you smack a stump.

Member Posts: 56 | Hi Steve...I think the MotorGuide PTSv is the most versatile trolling motor on the market right now for a walleye fisherman because of it's depth tracking ability. If you're fishing structure it's invaluable because you can set it for a specific depth and know the boat will stay on that depth regardless of what your doing. Very handy when you need to net a fish or retie a line. The PTSv is also great in heavy current because it will run in continuous mode and stay where you point it- there is no leg-tiring feedback like you get from a cable drive motor and it will not spin if you take your foot off it. My digital steer MotorGuides have been great. Durable, quiet, and extremely fast to steer. Couple of tips: Use a RAM Trolling Motor mount to stabilize the head and a Velcro strap around the shaft near the motor for rock-solid mount. I also replace the standard plastic prop with MotorGuide's aluminum prop because there's no flex or vibration at higher speeds. Jim Carroll NPAA #333

Member Posts: 859 Location: Appleton wi | Depth tracking system are very diffucult to use in windy and wavy condition they do not compusate well for those conditions and you might as well have it in manual mode cause your going to adjust with foot pedal anyway(especially in a trolling situation). I just removed my pin point system for that reason and I just purchased minn kota 80lb power drive w/auto pilot, copilot and xducer.Maybe its the 10 years prior to this boat and using autopilot I could never get use to depth control and found it be over-rated . As far as the river fishing and spring time where there is fast flow of water and you must float the same speed as the river a compassed system is the only way to go to maintain boat control and compusate for windy conditions.
