Does anyone have a Walleye prediction for the 2005 spring season? Tons of eyes? Slow burn?

Can anyone tell me when the Crappie action starts on the Wolf in spring and possibly some pointers as to where to look?

Its going to be a great year for walleye on the Wolf river system this year.If we have another great hatch this year you might see the bag limit raise in the next year or so.Crappies are hard to figure out in the spring. The fall bite is great on the river.

Best walleye run in 20 years......not that I've fished it for 20 years. Soon.

Hmmm wonder if they would raise the daily limit for 'Bago eyes? It's definately poised to be the best hatch on record.

Well, in my opinion we are a little late right now not by much. Looking at the 10 day forcast I would say with a gradual warm up and some decent rain totals in the next 2weeks, conditions could be classic for a great walleye run.

Great system and gonna be another great year! I think there will be many 15-17" fish caught and a fair amount of 20-23" males. Wouldn't surprise me to hear of a couple 27"-29" females either. I would suspect there will be a few more years of this although, I have SERIOUS concerns about the draw down of the river that is going to take place starting this year. We need to get involved so we don't have to chase fish all the way to Shawano in the coming years! Many people have put many hours and dollars into shoreline restoration marsh development and so much more that I would hate to see it all runined by keeping the water level so low so long into the year!

TYEE,

When is the drawdown and what is the purpose of it? Why would it be bad for the marsh? Drawdowns are a common technique for improving native marsh vegetation, as the seeds of many of these species need to be scarified in order to germinate. This is purposely being done on several pools of the Mississippi River for several years now.

The drawdown of water is somewhat related to the fact that Lake Michigan water levels are historically at such low levels. I have also heard that there are some pretty powerful lobbiests in the form of power boaters with those big fancy pleasure boats. Unfortunately they have donated to the right people apparently persuading them with their money that they know what is best for the Fox Valley Watershed. If I am perpetuating a rumor about that one then please someone offer another reason.

More water always has meant better fishing and spawning in my opinion. We need more water for me to predict any kind of banner year as far as catching or spawning goes.

And while I feel for the adjacent land owners, I personally would like to see the river run through the woods from about April 4-April 28. More water=better fishing.

Heres a link for those that need to know more. This needs more attention and if ma nature doesn't cooperate this year I think there might be some very upset people in the future!

Tyee,

I'd like for you or anyone else to convince me that keeping the lake level on winnebago 6" lower is going to to affect the spring run.

I ask How? How will it keep the water from not flowing down the wolf river?

Once the winter draw draw has reached it's low water level. It will remain there til when? Til ice out on lake winnebago. This is typically weeks after the river is open. I believe average ice out date for winnebago is somewhere around the first week in april. With that said the peak of the walleye run usually occurs around the 15th of april, give or take a week on average.

So with this generalization....that the corp is going to fill winnebago and "flood" the marshes for a successful hatch with in a week or two. AND were at the mercy of mother nature all while this grand plan is to occur. I'm sorry but I disagree.

So once again, I ask, how is keeping the lake 6" lower going to affect the spring run?

Jayman, As I understand it the level was proposed to be held at 2.5' untill July 1st! (3"lower than in years past). Obviously ma nature plays a big part. If spawing occurs within the first 2 weeks of April and an additional 14 to 21 days for those fry to be carried back. This means there needs to be high water in the marshes through mid May. for this entire period right? If the rains are average, this still means low water levels does it not? I think your right ma nature plays a big part.

Yep, ma nature controls the spring run and success. Not the corp. Lake levels are typically at thier lowest level of the year when the fish are on the run up and can be even while the fish are returning.

FYI for those interested.
There will be a conference call on April 7th at 9:30 am CST to discuss the refill of Lake Winnebago this spring and the current basin conditions. (888)709-9420 access code #25637

I also do not put great stock in to the idea that the lowering of water on Winnebago does much to the water level, say in New London. We are quite a few feet in sea level I beleive higher then the lake so imagine the amount of water that would have to be held on the entire system in order for our water here to be even a foot higher. Our water levels here (IMHO) are a direct result of water tables, springs and the flow of the tibutaries feeding the Wolf joining with the flow from the headwtaers.

Well things don't look to good for the next 7 days folks! I really wonder if this is a ma nature thing or not? take a look at these projections and tell me if you think there will be fry baking in the sun or not? Should they be closing a few damns? hummmm. makes ya think don't it? We didn't get the rain this week that was projected and I am sure many a egss will be and have been laid already!

Good Luck
Tyee
