Member Posts: 874 Location: Neenah, WI | I volunteered to replace the bilge pump on my friends Javelin 370A yesterday. After looking around under the floor I found that the pump is installed UNDER the gas tank in the stern of the boat. Yup, couldn't see it or even get my hand down to it. I figured I was doing something wrong or having one of those senior moments. Sooooo, I went to Spellman's marina where the boat was bought new in '96. The mechanic (Devon, who I know) said with a smile "oh sure, you have to pull the tank". This would entail siphoning 1/2 tank of gas, disconnecting hoses and wires, removing clamps, skinning knuckles and swearing. My estimate to have a dealer do it: over 300 bucks- For a $25.00 BILGE PUMP!!!!!! IMHO some engineer at Javelin needs to have a slap upside the head. What have you found while working on your boat that made you stop and scratch your head and ask, "what were they thinking"?

Member Posts: 279 Location: Rockford MN | Come guys it works on paper why won't it work after its put together? LOL You don't have problems with what They design, you have problems fixing what they design! Answers= " Well we never thought you might have a problem with that" I must say they seem to be listening these days, improvements and easy access to most things on all the newer boats. Maybe we dumb old fishermen are'nt so dumb after all??? I hour in a boat and you can see all things you would change, but the next guy would change something else.

I guess that's where I can say I've always been happy since my switch to Triton as access to the pumps and the such has always been very good. Although the long fill tubes on my Jon boats had made putting gas in an event that could take awhile. I remember lots of interesting things that make me wonder why some people are getting paid over the years. I think I had a car that you had to loosen the alternator to change one spark plug and another that you could only really change 7 on. Wonder who thinks some of that stuff out, like the inside door handles on Camero's and Firebird's in the 70's. I bet 90% of them were re-glued or screwed to the door because they broke. I remember the dash lights on every Mopar I ever owned then quit too and the clock never worked, well for long anyway. Yup, seen some engineering in boats and other stuff that makes you wonder but then again I'm sure we ALL have had some (not-so) brilliant ideas, mine usually involve plumbing. ![]()

Member Posts: 8 | I worked in the auto repair industry for 10 years! Same dumba$$ stuff going on in there too. They should make EVERY braniac engineer repair everything he designs just once so he knows what he has done!!!
