I was over in pool 13 on Saturday. Windy, cold and tough to fish. Water was running too fast for the main river wing dams (I think). The backwaters were full of bass fishermen running around at 50 MPH. I don't think they were doing much either.

I was going to try backwaters for crappies but had no luck at that. Tried a couple of wingdams for walleye but I think it may be a little early for that.

The bite up here on 4 has been anything but consistent, you can have a real good day and then get your butt kicked the next. This next blast of warm weather should really turn things around I hope. The only thing I like about these tough bites is that they are usually followed by suicidal fish, cant wait.

This week I have finally been able to start pulling fish out of the back sloughs in as little as 2ft of water. Have still been getting them in the channel but on the dams now too.

Can I ask you guys a few questions?

When you say you are pulling fish in 2ft of water, how and where(what types of cover) are you doing this.

Main river channel breaks vs. wing dams, why would they be on one rather than the other?

Thanks

Giant question. Main river breaks: eddies, inside turns, troughs, dunes, riprap. Fish move around alot on these spots so it will change daily. As far as wing dams, alot of people have been waiting for them to settle in there summer patterns and put on the feed bag. With the warm spell and riseing water temps patterns will change. Bait fish move in the backwaters and fish will follow them. Some of my biggest fish come from water less then 4 feet. Shallow water fish spook fast so quiet is the word. For instance, the IL river ONLY has main channel structure that fishable.

John is correct when say quite is the best approach. The fish I find shallow are very spooky and are in the feeding mood! All you have to do is get that bait in front of their face and watch out. Shallow points with some deeper water generally close are best. You can find tones of these in the back waters or at the points leading off the main channel. As soon as the minnows are done spawnging they will start stacking up on these points and where the points you find those minnows, you will find the big girls. You just have to be there at the right time. Along with the walleye, you will find the Smallies and Largies.

I was out last night and found the inside face of a dam loaded with bait, the stripers were all over the bait and the first cast I through up in there with a fire tiger, I had a 20" walleye. Proceeded to pull out 2 more fish. Water depth on that inside of the dam, less than 4 feet. I have yet to see the minow show back up on the points since this last cold spell, but the walleyes are still there as well waiting. I would love to see the minows show back up before next weekend.

Another question for you guys. How late into the summer is this productive? During late aug. and sept. is this still productive?

It should not change much. But alot depends on water levels as to where the fish are on the dams. Closeing dams start to get my attention in the fall if the water is up.
