It's 7:18 and I'm getting ready to head out to the boat to run charters for today and tomorrow on Saginaw Bay. And there isn't even a slight breeze blowing. It's really a shame we can put a man on the moon, and can't accuratley tell the weather two days in advance. I will be trying my regular plastic program to begin with, but have decided to pick up some MEAT and maybe put down the program Chase Parsons shared with me at the PWT weigh-in, if this cold front has the bite off some. I'll check back in late this afternoon and let you know how I did.

Well, it's 10:55am and Captain Cocky is back home in front of the Computer. Figuring that there might be some residual waves from the last two days on the Bay, I moved my charter back to 10:00am on purpose, so that the bay would have clamed down. Well, got to my boat at 9:00am, observed the flags at the marina pulsating straight NE at a steady pace, and seen that my charter buddy next door was out, so I called him.

He went out in 3's and 4's at 8:00am but said they were kinda calming down some. His boat of course is a 30 footer. Also said the plastic bite was non-exsistant because the water was off colored. He was catching a few nice ones on the 47's with meat and bouncers. So back into town I go to get some meat. Get back and my clients were there. Thats when I find out that none have ever been on BIG water. I explain what we might run into, tell them all my concerns and fishing conclusions with the waves as they are, and let them make the call. We head out and I speared a rogue 5 footer almost immediately, made a little girl cry and turn around and come back in. Taking them back out Monday.....weather permitting.

Hey Capt. Dan, if the PWT scheduled a blow day, do you think they would have fished the whole day today? Just looking for an honest opinion. No agenda here.

Wulp Reels, thats a tuffy.

Near the end of the first day, I stood by and watched Jay from Mercury Motors work on Kieth Kavejekz's 9.9 Mercury Kicker, while me and Kieth chewed the fat. It was my first time actually getting to look up close at a Tracker Tundra with the monster 275 Verado (spelling) he has on the back. I was impressed with this platform and would (at first glimps) trust it in medium rough seas. Then while chewing the fat with a local friend, we watched as boat after boat made it's way out of the parking area, with entrants heading back to their perspective Motels.

These boats were a variety of both large and small Lunds, Rangers, Crestliners, Tritons, Starcrafts, Princecrafts and a few off brands. Some I observed were on the small (no freeboard) side for BIG water duty, and were boats I wouldn't launch at the local inland lake, let alone the Great lakes. This I'm afraid might be the fly in the oinment, if I was calling the (stay or go ) shots as far as the weather goes, even for todays moderate waves. And even with the boat owners (well honed) handling abilities. I'm thinking I would have to turn the job of Tournament Director down if it was ever offered to me. Because I would continually error on the side of good sense, given the vast assortment of boats in these tournaments. That's the best answer I can give you.

Howdy Dan.......

So ya made a little girl cry huh....LOL!!!

IMHO, you did the right thing by putting the customers perception of safety in front of yours, you are a good man. And they respect your decisions else they wouldn't be coming back.

And as the different boats go, do you remember what we all rode out in on that beast of a bay back in 1990? Remembr when a BIG boat was 17'6"????? Guys would go out in those boats in the same exact conditions and go out to the islands!!! YIKES!

In fact I'd bet Keith would have some stories about that time in walleye angling. I seem to remember a tourney where they (Kieth and Gary) won the Sag Bay event with a one day catch on the bay, as Sunday was so rough they couldn't work their fish.......

Rells.

I prefer to call it a seasoned diplomat.
