Member Posts: 213 Location: Forest Lake, MN | Fugawi is a map software on CD. You can buy maps from them or others like me to use with it or georeference your own. Georeference is a fancy word for scanning in a paper map and locating three or more points with coordinates on it so the program can tell you coordinates any where you want. When I orginally did the Devils Lake map in a paper version from 1980 InfraRed photos, even with just that one level of information it quickly became clear there was too much map for that. What makes it so good for example is now with it I can use seven layers of maps from different dates of air photos and topo maps covering Devils Lake to a way higher degree of accuracy too. 8 Layers if I include one that only covers the very west end of the lake. This lets who evers using it pick out a point of interest and then flick thru the layers to see how it layed with the water through time. The imagery for Oahe is going to be the same when it goes back up and its going to be great. The amateurs fishing with Bruce Samson over at the Mobridge PWT got to see the 1949 predam maps on his computer in the boat as they went along. Bruce and a couple others used them last year, but prefishing with Bruce was the first time for me and now I can't wait to go back. Fugawi isn't the only map software out there, its just the main one I use. There's Ozi Explorer, you can talk to Perchjerker on it, and one I just started using, Global Mapper, but it takes more mapping and computer skill and its over $200. With the 3Dfield and the Lowrance Sonar Logs, people like Bruce are going to be able to create their own maps and display them using one of these map softwares, right there on the water. I think Doc is going to be doing at least one more article on this in the future. Some thing to look forward too. WarrenMN

| Fugawi is a mapping software that comes on a CD that you load to your computer. You can display maps on Fugawi just like a GPS. The maps are purchased from Warren Parsons 651-982-1401 or Great Plains Mapping 913 441 4241. Warren has maps of the Northern USA and Great Plains Mapping has maps of Central USA. I use aerial photos of clear lakes, topo maps of reservoirs before they flooded, maps of reservoirs when they are in a drought, aerial photos of Devil's Lake before the lake rose 28 feet, and to display contour maps that I make with different software. Most important, you can create waypoints and trails using Fugawi and transfer them to your GPS. It is very easy for Lowrance users. You can purchase Fugawi at www.greatplainsmapping.com and you will get an instructional CD with it. Warren Parsons will also help with instructions in effectively using Fugawi. My first pick is a LakeMaster surveyed map on a digital card and I use Fugawi for the examples above. I will be teaching some high tech mapping software courses this winter besides the Lowrance Schools with Bill Diedrich. I will put the schedule on www.hightechfishing.com in the future. I am still fishing so that takes my time until October. If I didn't like Warren I probably wouldn't share this information as it really helps in tournament fishing and I would prefer the competition to not use it!! Doc | |||

Member Posts: 213 Location: Forest Lake, MN | If you wanted to see how Fugawi works I could bring the lap tops to some where if you guys knew a place we could spread out on a table with a plug-in near by. Or we could even try the COE charts on the water if some one had a boat with a cig-lighter. I'd prefer not having to haul the Titanic any where. I repacked the wheel bearings myself for the first time and a little hesitant to run very far just yet. WarrenMN Edited by WarrenMN 8/4/2005 6:18 PM

Member Posts: 1382 | Maybe we could have a Fugawi session here in LaCrosse sometime this fall or winter, it's kind of centrally located. If interested Warren give me a call. Zach 507.895.7510

Member Posts: 213 Location: Forest Lake, MN | We could, but maybe with a little arm twisting you could get Bruce to do a class down there. I was thinking more of some Saturday in the next month so people could look at it while fishing on the river was still fresh in their minds. The units are mobile enough I could take them out on the river for a length of timet too, how lond depending how many wanted to do it. For me the best area would be Prescott or Red Wing. Member Posts: 213 Location: Forest Lake, MN | Hey TMac, been a while. As always I'm trying. Too bad I don't have any thing up in your neck of the woods. I gave PaWalleye a set of Sak maps just to see if I can get one person up there using them and the low water imagery. LOL Oh well. WarrenMN Edited by WarrenMN 8/10/2005 7:37 PM
