Subject: Fall Bite

I hear often about a fall walleye bite on Lake Winnebago. I am not too familiar with the general time of this bite and the best tactics for catching walleyes on Winnebago during the fall. Could anyone post some general info regarding this topic. I was out on Winnebago a few days ago and the bite was very slow to non-existent -- I have always heard August was a slower month for walleye fishing. I have always been interested in learning more regarding the supposed fall bite. Thanks.

The August walleye bite on 'bago is typically slow. There's so much forage available, why should the walleyes chase a bait? Expect the bite to pick up in September - once the water starts cooling down - and continue until ice up. The reefs generally pick up in the fall, as well as the shore bite, and sometimes the trolling bite as well. Jigs, slip bobbers or drifting/backtrolling rigs will all work, and gets much better.

The best thing about the fall bite is the lack of pressure. It seems people are hunting or doing other activities, and many days you'll not see any boats on your favorite area. Give it a try - you'll be pleasantly surprised.
