Location: Essexville, MI./Saginaw Bay. | I seen yet another curve ball that Mother Nature throws today on the Bay. I'm in Hoyles this morning setting up for the days charter. There isn't so much as a breeze in the marina. The flag at Hoyles channel mouth (right on the Bay) is hanging motionless and straight down. I figure the bay is flat as a pancake. My clients arrive, we head out. 1 mile out I encounter some shop, then a steady 12 to 15 knot East wind with 2 to 3 footers. I slow the boat at my usual spot and the water column is solid floating broken weeds and weed matts everywhere. Seems every weed on the Calahan reef has dislodged and is on the West side of the Bay. I keep running North east and it only gets worse. We try to troll but it's useless with cranks. So we pull lines and I set up with harnesses and keels and let each client hold a rod to keep up with the weeds. Called her quits at 12:30pm with not one fish. Didn't mark as many today, but the perch guys were still pulling some good numbers in isolated spots according to the radio. |
