Location: Rhinelander | A broken wrist and a badly needed bath was the lucky result for the driver. I've had to brake for Moose a few times driving to Dryden, they make a Whitetail look like a mouse.

| Heck, he's just a nubbie too.
Came close to a big cow a few years ago. On our return trip we saw a big cow dead in about the same area on 502. Something ya definately don't want to hit. |

Location: Green Bay , WI | hit a moose with a ford f-150 about 6 years ago, while heading up to bear hunt we were late and traveling way to fast out it stepped and into the front it went. Destroyed the whole truck I can laugh now because it wasnt my truck, but boy was I shaking for about a week had to rent a car to finish our trip what a pain. |

| Was stationed at Loring AFB in Northern Maine in the early eighties. One guy lived on a one lane gravel road off post and at 0200 one morning came upon a 1200 lb full grown bull moose blocking his way to the house. He was driving a late 70's Pinto or Maverick or some type of small compact car. Low and behold, he was tired and wanted to get to sleep. So, he blew the horn at the moose. Did I mention this was in the middle of the rut? Long story short, the moose charged the vehicle 14 times until the car was on it's side in the ditch and the occupant was looking for new undergarments. Totaled the vehicle. These things would actually come on post and roam around. Totally amazing animals. |

| I saw the results of the same horn honking approach but it wasn't a compact car - it was a semi.
He needed a tow after that episode. And a radiator, and a hood, and fenders, and a bumper, and....
I used to drive big truck, mostly Midwest to Northwest. During the winter season I always tried to stay off highway 191 dropping down to Yellowstone during dusk. Well, one day I was just running too late, I hit the 35-22 mile marker area right as the sun was setting. Elk winter there. They usually stay back from the road during daylight, but in the evening they get right up on the road. I was watching for them, it was not a surprise when I came around the corner to see several, even many, elk on the road. I stopped the semi to wait for a path to clear on the road. After about 5 minutes, I saw an opening that I figured I could drive through, and started moving forward. When I got into the herd, and found myself sitting in a Semi, looking out my window, eyeball to eyeball with an Elk about 3 feet from my face, it was a pretty eery feeling. I wished I had waited a little longer. Usually when your in a Semi, you have to look down - with the elk, our eyeballs were at the same 'level - straight accross'. Somehow I didn't feel safe with my window down...
After spending many years on the road in the NW, it's pretty much my conclusion the earth is owned by wildlife - they just allow us to use it. They really don't care how much you may have paid for it, if they want to use the land, they are just going to. The way it should be.

Location: Northern Illinois | Up in Canada several years back, stopped at a gas station near the town of Schreiber, on Lake Superior. Saw a pickup whose front end formed a well shaped V, the firewall being pushed back to where the front seat was located. Engine fluids dripping on the ground. Thought the driver hit a tree, nope a Moose. They found the mouse badly injured, as memeroy serves, about 1 mile away from the accident, in the bush and alive. They had to destroy the moose. |

| We had a cow moose up in Finland AFS, MN when I was stationed there in the late 70's. She would stand in the middle of the road, and move when SHE wanted to. If you honked your horn, she would walk up to the vehicle, and then put her front feet on the hood. Lots of newbies just had to see if we were just pulling their leg. It only took one toot, and she'd be on the hood! hehehe |
