| Looking at a new engine and I would like the one with the best gas mileage. Any suggustions.

| How big are you looking for? I love my Yamaha 115 Four Stroke. Its very fuel efficient and very quiet! Any of the four strokes are going to be pretty fuel efficient. But I really have no idea which brand is better than the other! |

Location: Oshkosh, Wisconsin | GENERALLY, fuel efficiency of an 4 stroke motor is a little better than everything else out there, but the DFI engines are very close (within about 5% in most of the tests I've seen with identical boats). Regular two strokes are generally going to use 30% more fuel than either a DFI or a 4 stroke. Not sure where the E-tec or Verado fit into this...
That said, most of the 4-strokes are considerably heavier than the same HP DFI engine, so you will lose some speed and potentially, some hole-shot.
I have an optimax and get between 4 and 6 mpg depending on speed and water conditions.
One other tidbit - most things I have read suggest that optimal fuel efficiency for most outboards was at about 3000 rpm. |

Location: Neenah, WI | I have a Yamaha OX-66 Saltwater 2 cycle and it's not nearly as fuel efficient as my '99 225 Opti. That motor was downright super for gas mileage. Nope, it didn't blow up either, it's still going strong. |

| I have a 225 Yamaha 4 stroke on my Lund and I think it is great. |
