Subject: Weekly report for 2/12/06

Hi Gang:

Well the sturgeon spearing season is under way, and it appears that it might be a long season. Day one the spearers only registered 39 fish, and there was actually no fish registered at Waverly Beach in Menasha.I was shocked to see these low numbers. There are a few factors that are really hurting the season so far though. The lack of good ice is one, and from what I have heard, the visibility is very poor in the lake right now as well. If you are out there, please be safe, and I hope you get a nice fish.

A few weeks ago a writer from the AP came up to Stockbridge to do an article on Sturgeon spearing. Well today I was sent the article and it is pretty cool. The article mentions Val's Bait and Tackle too, so that was nice to see one of my good friends get some national attention. Below is the link to the article. Check it out after your done reading this!!

I have recently teamed up with Grandma's Breading. I would like to welcome them to the Winnebago Fishing family and let you all know that there fish breading is very good. They have two versions right now, grandma's breading and also lily river, which is a lighter version. You can read more about there great products by just clicking on the pics of grandma through out our website. Oh yeah, the cost is very good on this, and I highly recommend you pick up a bag!

I wanted to talk a minute about the message board on the website. This is a great service for you to use. You can add your pictures, sell items, leave info, get info, and you can also send private messages to one another. All you need to do is sign up on the board, and this great service is then free for you to use. It really make the site more exciting, and I hope you all take advantage of this. If you need help getting set up, feel free to let me know, and I will try and help you out.

As most of you know, I am selling homemade crawler harnesses. these are $3.50 each and are made of the finest components I can find. I use 10 LB. line, 8 MM glass beads, interchangeable clevises,#2 blood red hooks, and #6Colorado and Hatchet blades. I have many different colors to choose from, so just send me an e-mail and let me know where you want them sent, and what colors, and these can be yours. They all come individual wrapped for easy storage in a 2 mil poly bag with a zip loc top. You can also order them on our book a trip page through paypal. Just scroll to the bottom, and you will see where to get them. I would show you some pics, but unfortunatley my digital camera broke, and I have yet to go and get a new one.

Ok, so you want some reports from the area so I will let you know what I know. Shawano Lake has good ice for the most part, and bluegills seem to be heating up in and around the Cecil area.

The east shore on bago is not doing very well, but I did run into a fisherman that had close to 20 perch, and a few nice walleyes. He would not tell me where though, but his fish looked to be pretty nice.

Small pan fish are being caught near Boom Bay on poygan, but I heard the ice is not real good and you really have to watch where you are going.

Partridge Lake seems to be giving up some northerns, but I have not been that way to know what the ice is like, so use caution if going out there.

Devils Lake , ND is giving up perch, northern and walleyes, and I will be out there in a few weeks. This is going to be an awesome trip, and I am really looking forward to it.

Some friends of mine got back from Lake Winnebigoshish, MN and said they had a good time chasing perch. They said the size is decreasing from years past, but the action is still very good. they used swedish pimples in orange and silver for these.

I recently have been seeing a lot of boats on trailers in the area. I know some of them are heading for open water. I just want you to think safety when you are doing this. Just because the lake or river may appear open, there can always be ice floating just under the water surface. Please keep your eyes wide open for this. If you are going to anchor, make sure you have a sharp knife in your boat to cut those anchor ropes, if the ice starts to climb up on them. I saw this happen several years ago to a guy near Winneconne and it was not fun to watch.

Please get in touch with me, if you need your username and password for the website. Your old password is no longer valid, and several of you have not gotten a new one from me yet. just send me an E-mail, and I will get you set up. Also, a lot of membership renewals are coming up, and I hope you choose to stay around for another year. It is because of you guys that I am able to put together a report, and also try and continue to give you good solid information on a timely basis.

I am filling up fast for June, so if you are looking to book a trip, please book now. Just send me an E-mail, and we can hook up a date that will work for both of us. I have references available if you need them.

Ok, that is about all I know, so here are your questions to me..(My favorite part of this report)

"Axl, if you had to choose just one bait to fish with on Bago what would it be and why?"

Wow, great question! I think I would have to go with a pocket full of 1/16 oz. jigs. You can tip them with a variety of critters, and jigs always seem to catch fish for me.

"Keep up the great work Axl, and is there anything new coming?"

Actually, I am in the process of putting together a new page called "upcoming events" that I will be involved with. Hopefully this way, I will be able to meet some of you, and also see you at some events I will be in or attending.

"Do you promise a limit of fish on your trips when you are guiding people?"

No I do not. I will promise you a great day of fishing, a fun time on the lake with safety in mind at all times, and I will do my best to try and put you on fish. I like to catch fish too, so therefore I will try and locate an active school of fish at all times, so we can catch fish.

"What do you think the fishing is going to be like on the lake in 2006?"

I think we are going to have a very good year. The ice conditions were not real favorable, thus saving a lot of fish. The bite was also very slow most of the winter so far due to the gizzard shad, and I feel this is saving a lot of fish for us soft water guys, to go out and chase this spring, summer and fall.

That is all I know for right now. Not a lot to report on, but soon the ice will be gone, and we will all be on the rivers. be sfae, have fun, and remember to be careful out on the ice.
