Member Posts: 2300 Location: Berlin | I use 3 different length rods. 7', 7.5' and 8'. They are the Walleye Angler rods from bass pro. The absolute best trolling rods I have ever used in mine or anybody elses boat. When I went to Bass Pro I told them I wanted a discount for buying 9 rods so they gave me a "buy 2 get one free" deal. I am glad I asked! Edited by Rich S 2/17/2006 3:26 PM

I"ve been using 7' St. Croix fiberglass trolling rods with Sealine 17s for everything. They work just fine for boards. I'm not sure what the rod's model number is, but the rod blank is blue in color with black foam grips. I use Tectan premium plus line, 13.9 lb. test. This line has a diameter smaller than 10 lb. Trilene XL and is available through Cabelas. A 1200 meter spool is about $25. I even use this combination for an occasional Lake Michigan trip, although the rods are on the light side, I have landed quite a few Kings over 20 lbs. Last year, on Winnebago, I snagged a sturgeon in the back and managed to bring it alongside the boat and retieve my crankbait after a 40 minute battle. I estimated the sturgeon to be about 75 lbs. I think the 7' rods make landing fish a little easier too, especially when fishing by yourself.

Member Posts: 118 Location: OSHKOSH, WI | What are your opinions on the okuma line of rods and line counter reels....I have heard mixed reports of quality and durablilty. The 8' trolling rods seem to be pretty good price wise..with the magna pro line counter reels a reasonable price. Thanks for the input..Bob

I have used the magdas had trouble wiht handles and the spools. But I also use convectors on my salmon gear and have had good luck with them handling the load.I guess its all in what you want to pay take my advice and buy the best you can afford.I use sealines 17 and 27 for walleyes and 30 size convectors for salmon. They have served me well

Member Posts: 106 Location: Chilton, WI | I have three 7 foot rods that I use for trolling and they work fine with boards. I mostly use the three shorter ones when I'm by myself. Its a little easier bringing a bigger fish up to the net with a shorter rod in one hand versus a long one. But when I don't have to net the fish by myself I prefer to use the 8 foot rods with boards. Theflyman, my 7 foot trolling rods are okuma and I like them a lot. They are a few years old though so I don't know if they are the same as the newer ones. As for thier reels, my buddy has some (not sure what model) and he has had the gears strip out of quite a few of them. He's replacing them with Diawa as they go.

You have to tell yourself what you will be using crank or harness? I fish GReen Bay alot useing harness with my 7footers by myself. Just think if you use harnesses most of them are at least 48 inches long. I had a hard time trying to net the fish because the rod was not long enough. WHEN OUT and got myself 9 foot rods

I also use the 7' 6", one piece, telescoping handle, rods from BassPro. They are the best rods I've used for planer boards. BassPro usually has them for $40 each during their spring sale which starts next weekend I believe. Otherwise they run $60. I have a buddy that closed his tailgate on two of them. They gave him new ones, no questions asked!! The guy at BassPro said that they don't care how they break, they will replace them for up to a year. They have them in 8' and 8' 6" also. I spend most of my time on Bago and GreenBay. I'll be going down to Guerney for the sale. Not sure where you live....

No problem, be sure to bring toll money for the FIB's

Forget the toll money. Take 41 to Stearns School Road (3rd stoplight) turn right. It only takes a few minutes longer and you get in on the north side so you don't have to fight the traffic on 132.
