Location: Menasha, WI | I should have gone to the Walleye Ice Breaker Event.
Each afternoon this week, I've seen crowds to the SE of Oshkosh and heard reports of a good bite. This morning I did something I never do, I followed the crowd. I walked out from the Oshkosh Yacht Club 2.5 miles fishing every 1/4 mile or so, then looping to the south, then back towards shore. I got a 6" eye and a 4" whitebass for my troubles. Those were the only 2 fish I marked. To top it off, I stepped into a 10" hole that was covered in slush -- up to my knee in water, wet boot, cold foot and a sore knee. There's a reason that I never follow crowds, and I won't do it again.
I also stopped by Asylum on my way home and caught a couple small perch.
The WI ice fishing season is over for me (I have trip to northern MN scheduled for the last weekend in March). Bring on the rain and warm temps, I want to get my boat out! |
