I'm assuming that the very heavy rains we are getting here in the southern part of the state are making their way to the New London area? If true, I'm assuming that this is great news for another successful spawn with the walleyes being able to make it into the marshes. Can anyone verify this? I hope this is great news for the system.

The rains will help, but I think were too far from a great hatch.....and anything now is already too late. The river coming up might help the fishing.

Edit to add:
But rest assure the future looks bright for 'Bago. There's got to be a billion 8" walleyes in the system right now from last year.

Jason,

Can you explain a little further? I'm assuming from your comment that you feel most of the spawning has already occurred? Am I reading into your reply correctly?

Thanks for reply and your observations.

I'm also glad to hear about the 8" fish. Must be frustrating but nice to hear.

No, I'm not saying that the spawing has occurred/finished. Lack of water has made it difficult for fish to get into marshes, fish will continue traveling up river in search of spawning marshes. Granted even on low water there are still some places for the fish to get to.

Questions are, How far along are they with the spawn? Will the rising water "expidite" the spawn? How far up have the fish traveled? Will the rising water be enough to help "flush" the post spawners back down?

Water temps were ideal this last weekend for spawning. And I saw the shocking boat flotilla enroute to the river last week so they are surveying/tagging in the marshes somewhere.

As a rough guess.....the big girls are gonna start coming down this week.

Thanks for the explanation Jason. It makes sense to me. Do you or anyone else know how much the water has risen? Doc, pasted a chart showing water levels and temps earlier. Does anyone know where he is accessing this?

6.1 degrees Celsius - sure I just got rid of my conversion factor. Anybody else know what 6.1 converts to in Fahrenheit?

Water level is rising, temperatures were dropping. I have a link to the guage and a celcius conversion table right on the Outdoors Section of my website, linked below with my signature.
KK told me on Friday that they have to stew in the marsh's for 3 to 5 days prior to spawning and that it was early yet. Females we have been catching have been pretty hard and males not milking very much, if at all. We are supposed to get some more rain so we could have some early spawners in limited locations followed by the remainder of the fish if the water continues to rise. Came up over a foot in the last few days with about 2 more feet to go to reach bank full stage. If it gets there it's a good sign that there is water in the marsh's. Needs to get there pretty quick though. Average spawning time around the 15th of the month.

C x 1.8 + 32 = F. I'll let you do the math

We caught a spawned out female two days ago already, but that was the only one, fished my raft last night in the nasty weather with nothing to show for it. Not much biting around by us right now, they must be mainly upriver already waiting to get into the marshes. There are always some early spawners, but I would assume that the bulk of the spawning will occur this week and into the weekend. Anyone have a report? I plan on getting out tomorrow but don't know exactly where yet. Thanks, Lance
