I cant believe the PWT is planning on trailering fish from Sak. all the way to Bismarck. Looks to be a catch and kill tournament. I thought the PWT was better than that!

Is this fact or just a rumor or guess? I find it hard to believe the PWT would be a part of a catch and kill tourney in October when it's usually easy to keep those fish alive.

Its easily over an hour drive from the ramp to Bismarck. Why even risk losing half or all of those fish that are going to be caught. I dont care if is October and the water will be a little cooler or not, fish without fresh water for over an hour is pretty gutsy.

I wouldn't prejudge the survival rate just yet. Yes, it's a fact they will be traveling from the ramp in to the weigh in. I believe they have the assistance and support from the DNR out there, too. I'll give the PWT a call for a 'read' on this issue as soon as is possible. I believe it's in the best interest of the anglers to have the fish alive at the weigh in, I'll see what the plans for that might be.

Here's a portion of a press release by the PWT:
'At the Championship, the top 50 pros, judged by their 2006 performance, compete for a first place prize of more than $100,000. They will fish Lake Sakakawea out of historic Garrison, and commute to the Civic Center daily'

thats brutal after spending 8 hours out in the boat you need to drive for an hour pulling your rig to weigh in then either that night or the next morning you will need to pull your rig back to the launch site or hotel. Just imagine the amount of gas that will be consumed is the PWT gonna pick up the tab for that. I feal bad for the guys that will be fishing this it is going to be a long 3 days. As far as the fish I am sure they will add ice to their live wells and maybe pump in fresh oxygen to help keep the fish nice and lively.

The time this takes will be no more than a standard weigh in, which runs 2 1/2 to 3 hours with a full field. Only 50 boats...

The PWT takes pretty good care of the Pros who make the Championship, so I wouldn't worry about them or the fuel. I don't think the drive time will bother them much.

I really doubt the PWT will pick-up the gas bill. And I attended the weigh-in for the last Championship, and it's a LONG one! Probably lasts a 2 1/2- 3hrs AFTER the Anglers arrive. They really draw out the championship. So....couple that with an hr drive to the site=possible dead fish. Unless the PWT has some kind of plan. This looks like a disaster.

I'll guess that the PWT does HAVE a plan and if we are all patient we'll hear about it in time.

I'm not assuming anything BUT why do you think that everyone has to drive themselves to the weigh-in? I can see this happening on the last day so everyone can see the boats but why sooner? Just a thought. There are other ways for them to transport fish than in the boats livewell.

Maybe this is not a C&R tournament? We are not talking about a lot of fish here. Just a thought.

Either way, I would not assume that these fish are going to perish from being in a livewell that long. Guess we'll have to wait and see what the plan is.

Just saw Jim K on the news here in Bismarck and he said this is going to be a kill event.

In a WalleyeFIRST interview this morning with Jim Kalkofen, Executive Director of the PWT, Mr. Kalkofen confirmed that North Dakota Fisheries Biologists have issued a harvest permit for the PWT Championship this fall out of Garrison.

" This ( the harvest permit) is what they want us to do. There are several factors contributing to the harvest permit issue, including the fact many of the fish that time of year are in as much as 30' of water or more. We probably would have been issued a harvest permit even if the weigh-in was right there on the water. We have only 50 boats on the water the first two days, and each boat may harvest only 4 fish. After day two, the field narrows to 25 boats. Of course, not all the boats will catch a limit." he said. "We are working on a decision right now as to what charity will be designated for donation of the fillets, we will announce that soon."

Mr. Kalkofen continued, saying; "Steve, if anyone has any questions or concerns, ask them to give us a call! We will be happy to discuss any issues the public might have with the PWT."
