Member Posts: 1195 Location: Orland Park, IL | Well, tried trolling sat am for a spell and not much luck. No worries though, working on the program. Sunday, was gonna troll, but seen the waves, and decided the reefs were a calling. Launched at 530 outta pipe. Pretty quiet out there this morning. Waves were slapping. Green stand up jig 1/4oz drifting with leech or crawler. Orange and yellow too. Pitched to tops to backside of reefs while drifting. Just outside of brothertown launch. Me and a friend got our limit. Nothing over 17, but good eaters. One thing that caught my eye was my deadstick rod. All of the larger fish came off this deadstick rod. Sat in a rod holder all day with one of those yellow northland helicopter jigs and 1/2 a crawler. They were really whackin it. Early in day better, off the water by 1030 Brings up another question. I was all set to troll outside of pipe. But once I seen the winds, thought it was better to jig the reefs. Should I have just stuck to my plan and trolled? When do you guys make that call? Seeing as I got fish, cant complain. Curious though. Signed, Lifelong jigger, trollin FNG

Member Posts: 116 | Based on how I did, you did the right thing. I trolled for 3 hours out from Oshkosh about 3 miles with only a goat and one 7" eye for my efforts. My gut told me to fish rock because of the wind but my strong desire to do well in the mud at least once this year won out unfortunately.

Curious though. Mark, I've been out six of the past ten days and I haven't been able to fnd a good pattern on any given day let alone duplicate one day's success the next. Each time out, a fish here and there -- some drifting the reefs, some casting and retrieving jigs, and some pulling harnesses but nothing has produced consistently and the ones I've picked up have been generally small. Trolling hasn't produced eyes for me at all but I did discover some perch while trolling old style Hot-n-Tots. If you caught fish, you made the right choice.

Member Posts: 1195 Location: Orland Park, IL | Thanks guys. Funny part is, since I am new to this trolling thingy, I had my plan all figured out. Right now drawings are great. So I pencil up a small piece of paper with depth and length and go with. Sounds anal, I know, but will get better. A lot of times, I will ditch a pattern only to find out I should have stuck with it. This time it worked. Dont want to mention the times it didnt. Patience the key no?
