On a seriouser note. Today I had to go to Lacrosse to the printers. Ya know after you guys all left winter came around finally. Back waters that were ice free now have about 3 to 3 1\2 inches of ice. As I drove by the Genoa dam there were two guys standing on the ice just below the float. They walk across the main channel. But it was ok cause they had a SMALL john boat between them. There's open water below the dam, then there is about 30 feet of slush ice then solid ice. one guy was standing about 10 or 20 feet from the slush. The other guy was back a ways but the boat was probably a 100 or so feet away from either guy. Ya know I love to chase the eyes just about as much as anybody that walks this earth. But these 2 guys must have REALLY BEEN PISSED OFF at them fish. Sure am glad I never did anything like that when I was younger. Makes me wonder how in the heck I'm still breathing. Had one buddy push his small boat off the ice at the boat landing and fish south and did very well. The king of cake, Meeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

I lived on the Mississippi River (literally our summer house was on the banks of the river) for the first 20+ years of my life... Over that time I had at least four friends and acquaintances who drowned in the winter after falling through the ice on the river, there are too many variables. For a while I lived in a house on the Fox River in Algonquin, IL a mile north of the Algonquin Dam. Every winter a few snowmobiles would fall through right across the river from my backyard... Had two volunteer firemen on either side of me... They kept one of the rescue machines (snowmobile like thing with rubber pontoons) in one neighbors garage (an extension) because it was such a treacherous area. The ice was never stable on the east bank because of a high set of hills and numerous springs in that area.

Ice and rivers do mot mix well for safety unles you are talking about the Acrtic!
