Luckily for me, this all happened while walleye fishing and not pursuing musky. I'd agree, walleye guys use smaller hooks and a thrashing musky can be very dangerous compared to a walleye when trying to safely practice catch and release.

Every time I'm forced to watch a Bass show on TV, I cringe when I see them reach in there and grab those "Hog Boss" trebles with their finger and thumb and start wrenching. Are they simply (Needle Nose) eliterate? I've had a King Salmon and a huge Catfish teach me the only two lessons I ever want to learn about using long nosed steel to dislodge any and all hooks. In fact if I know I'm keeping the fish, he gets sent to Comaville long before any hook removal, with the miniature baseball bat I carry. ![]() ![]() ![]()

Member Posts: 3899 | Tougher? No. Smarter, yes. At least most of them! hehehe Worst I saw was on Lake Michigan, back in the 80's. My boss at the time, Joe, and I fished for ocean fish out of Milwaukee. One day, he landed the first fish of the morning. He pulled the fish, about a 12 lb king, out of the net. Just then, another strike, and when Joe looked at the rod bouncing, the fish did a flip, and buried one hook of the treble into his thumb. Went in next to the nail, and came out the top of the knuckle. Man, did he scream! Here he is, with a fish flopping around violently, all the while attached to his thumb vis a big treble hook! He squeezed that fish so hard between his knees, that all the guts came out the fish's a$$hole, and landed on the floor of the boat! I cut the hook to separate him from the now 8 lb King, and he proceeded reel in the other fish. He winced with every turn of the handle. Finally, I got to look at the damage. The barb was not showing. I need to push it through further. I told him to put a towel in his mouth, and bite down, as I knwe it was gonna hurt. I pushed on the cut end, he screamed, and finally the barb poked through. One more time, I grabbed the hook below the barb, and with one mighty twist of the pliers, the hook came free. A couple wine coolers later, and he was reeling in more fish. He never did pick a fish out of the net with hooks still attached! I haven't either. I learn pretty quick! Member Posts: 701 Location: upper michigan | My dad was trying to pull a spinner bait hook out of about a 25 inch Northern that fish gave a violent flip and landed in the water. I looked at my dad and he was holding his hand blood dripping everywhere. When that fish gave that flip its jaw bone speared my dads hand right in the big meaty part under the thumb. I pulled out 3 inches of impailed jaw bone out with a pair of pliers. it was not sticking out anywhere it went in at an angle that was freaking nasty.

Location: Rhinelander | Most Muskie anglers have a complete 'release kit' on board usually mounted in a easily reachable location including several lengths of needle nose pilers, a Knipex hook cutter, gloves for handling the fish, and specialty tools depending on the waters fished and techniques used. Knotless large nets like the Frabill Powercatch or Big Kahuna allow the fish to be unhooked in the water. Still, accidents happen, almost always because of over-confidence.
