Opening of the locks threatens fishing on Lake Winnebago, and they are scheduled to be in operation by 2010! Join the protest on May 19th - by land or boat! http://foxriverlocks.blogspot.com/

I support a new look at this proposal. I do not blieve that science supports the 100% effectiveness of the proposed barrier. Any "mistake" or "miscalculation" will probably be irrepairable. It is in everyone's best interest that the Winnebago system be totally protected.. No "almost sure" will do in this case.

It would also be useful to know if the organizers of this event had a plan of action beyond a one day protest and could provide some direction for participation. For example, I believe one avenue may be to get the fishing clubs & City Councils on the chain involved. If the clubs and the cities of Menahsa, Neenah, Oshkosh, Winneconne, Fremont, New London, etc were to pass resolutions opposing the opening, it would send a stronger message than a collection of indivduals protesting. There are numerous other avenues that could be explored as well.
On edit: I see the contact person for this protest is Mike Arrowood the Chairman of WFT. I'm much more interested. Edited by Viking 5/5/2007 9:06 AM

Member Posts: 185 Location: Port Washington, wisconsin | Who is primarily respsonsible for this lock opening? Can, or will we hold them financially responsible for the desimation of the fish resource, and the economic impact on the region, should their protective measures fail? Maybe that will get them thinking. Remember the Exon Valdez?

Member Posts: 874 Location: Neenah, WI | The Post Crescent had a great article over the weekend on the economic impact of fishing on the Winnebago system. Something like 234 MILLION bucks a year. I doubt that the locks can match that. I've been yelling about this for a couple of years now. I'm glad that WFT is getting involved. Let's hear from the folks organizing this protest (with names please).

The DNR, Wisconsin Department of Ag, and the federal Animal Plant Health Inspection Service are all trying to stop the spread of this virus in the great lakes area. Since Lake Michigan is a source of infection, opening the locks would potentially allow the transfer of the virus in bilge water to the Fox/Wolf River system. If they want fisherman to disinfect their bilges and empty all water when leaving the Great Lakes, how can they not oppose the opening of the locks. STOP THE SPREAD OF VHS KEEP THE LOCKS CLOSED. Get that message out and get an official position from the DNR on this issue. Larry Strelow

Member Posts: 5 | VHS is in the Winnebago system already...I wish we wouldn't have caught one on 4/28 but we did...I was shocked by the sight of it and just shook my head in bewilderment...We caught the walleye (17-18") in the upper lake Winnebago system on/near Winnneconne. We cut the line, bagged it and froze the fish to give to the DNR...This, I'm afraid is just the beginning...I wish i would have taken a pic to post but we didn't...It was approxiamately 3" x 4" pus and bloody mess on the side of the fish...

Member Posts: 340 Location: McFarland, WI | You cannot diagnose VHS on visual signs. There are numerous diseases that cause hemorrhagic lesions on fish and pus is not characteristic of a viral infection. Until virus is isolated, assume the system is VHS free.

Member Posts: 105 | I am sorry but you probably wont stop the spread of any of these even if the locks do not open. THey will inadvertible be spread by someone not knowing any better via the livewell or billage. Not to mention if there is any possible way that a fish can get into the lake through a small opening or anything like that it will go up the river to the lake. We have walleye on the River that pass through 3 sets of locks to get to their spawning grounds. Never been to the dam or what ever seperates the two bodies of water but if they can get through via the water way someone some day will make a mistake and it will get there. Just like the VHS has to go down the chicago sewer cannal into the illinois river and then up the mississippi to get anywhere near us on the upper mississippi, BUT it could get here sooner if someone does not take the precautions of draining their boat completely. Look a the erosion millfoil. Some thing again.
