| Windy, rainy and then windier... Hit the water today at 6:30 for our company tournament. We ran all the way from the Fin and Feather to the West end of Poygan in strong winds. By the time we got there, both my back and my head were asking "just what the heck are we doing out here today" I turned to my partner and asked him “didn’t this area of Poygan get hit by a tornado yesterday?’ There was debris floating all over the water including large chunks of the marsh that had broken off and were now floating like small islands.
Our first couple passes running harnesses produced nothing. We tried the center of the lake were we caught fish earlier in the week and still nothing. Water was so dirty you could not see my white bump board in my live well in 12 inches of water. Throughout the day, the wind and waves continued to pound.
We finally decided to run all the way to the North West end of the Lake to get out of the wind and found fish in cleaner water. We stayed tucked in the corner of the lake running in 3 1/2 to 5 feet of water running 15 feet behind the boards with a variety of crawler harnesses with 1/8 oz weights. At first we caught fish on #5 Perch/Gold back and then the bite switched to smaller Chartreuse #3's. We were happy to catch 15 smaller Walleyes in the boat today even though none of our fish were larger than 17 inches.
Our tournament today was a Skeeter Sanctioned event and the area of the lake we fished today looked like a showroom full of Skeeter Boats. The winner of our tournament, fishing from a Skeeter, took home an extra $1000 for fist prize.
There were some very nice fish caught in that corner of the lake today and I think it was the only fishable place on the lake.
