I have narrowed my boat search to a Ranger 1860 Angler, possibly 1850 Reata. My preference is a Yamaha 150 4-stroke. Boattest.com did a test with an 1850 reata and the Yamaha 4 and the results looked good. Time to get on plane was 2.9 seconds and top end was 50 mph.

Plan to add a kicker. Will use the boat mostly for fishing. Some tubing and possibly skiing.

I was wondering who owned an 1850 Reata or 1860 Angler and is running a Yamaha 150 4-stroke?

Broader qustion is which motors and electronics do people have on their 1850 reata and 1860 angler. Anything you would change on your configuration?

Thanks in advance for sharing!

Bill

You wont regret any Yamaha in my eyes, at least I havent seen anyone yet. And the kicker, thats your choice. If you do alot of trolling its nice to have. Electronics, well, your options are kind of endless, I personally would buy a Lowrance, and if you need a $200 or a $2000 unit they have what you are looking for!!!

Here is as close as I can get: my brother has a Skeeter WX 1880 with the Yamaha four stroke 150 on it. This boat and the Ranger 1850 or 1860 are so similar that the comparison should have some validity. He likes his engine pretty well but it is a hair louder than the 115 Suzuki 4-stroke he had on his previous boat. His Skeeter also has the T-8 kicker.

For electronics, I would suggest putting a Raymarine A-65 unit at your console. This wasn't available when I purchased a C-80 display or I would have gone this route. My C-80 is wonderful in picture quality and ability to be seen in bright sun. Here is an opinion of mine to take for what it is worth to you, maybe nothing: Raymarine supports their products for a longer period of time than Lowrance. Lowrance changes the product line just about every year and in about three years time, what you purchased is no longer supported and you might as well just chuck it. My own boat is a 2001 and has a Raytheon L760 color locator/GPS and it is still supported by Raymarine. The A-65 takes Navionics charts and would work for you wonderfully. You can go with a larger screen if you want to spend more and get the C-120 display and digital sonar unit. Good stuff! My brother wishes he had my C-80 in comparison to a Globalmap 3500C from Lowrance. Hard to see the contour lines on the 3500C.

Thanks for the input! Also heard that Yamaha extended their warranty to six years so going with an 1860 Angler with a 150 Yamaha 4 stroke.

I bought a Reatta 1850 with a 150 Etec on it a few months ago. Great combination. I was going to go with the F150 but upon my dealers recommendation went with the Etec. He sells fair more Reattas with F150s than Etecs but since I was going to use the boat for pulling my teenagers skiing, tubing and wakeboarding as well as fishing, he thought the Etec was the better choice. He thought the low end and mid-range performance was better on the Etec. Top end both motors run about the same.

As a long time (and satified) Yamaha owner I was a little hesitant to switch brands. So far I've been very pleased with my decision but don't think you can go wrong between the two.

Order parts for your Yamaha 150 and they will come in a Suzuki package. How can there be a difference in engine noise when Yamaha runs the same powerhead as Susuki? Now you know the truth!

There also have been issues with the Yamaha 150. I would go with the 150 hp Evinrude and 7 year warrantee. Alot more power and better fuel economy and also a little faster on top end. Evinrude also has no maintance for the first three years. No valves to adjust, oil to change and easier to winterize. A three year old could winterize an Evinrude. Move the throttle three times and it winterizes itself!

Now that is just silly. Yamaha and Suzuki have no affiliation whatsoever.

I was basically stating the observation my brother and I have both made...his Yamaha F150 is louder than the Suzuki 115 four stroke he had on his previous boat. Suzuki makes very quiet engines.

Maybe you should go down to the dealer and pull the motor cover of a Yamaha & Suzuki and look at the engine before you make that ignorant statement. I work at a dealership and they do have an agreement between the two. Order some parts for you 150 Yamaha and they will come in a Susuki package. Just rebuilt a 150 Yamaha and all engine parts came in a Susuki package, imagine that!?!?

I forgot to answer the original question; a guy I work with, my dad and a buddy all have the 150 F Yamaha, all have owned for at least 1 1/2 seasons. One is on a 1760 Tuffy, one on a 618 Ranger and one on a Skeeter 1880, speed wise they tell me they run as follows Skeeter 49 - 50, Tuffy 52 - 53, Ranger 53 - 54, the only one I know for sure is the Tuffy as I drove it. But all of these guys love the engines, none have had any problems and they get great fuel economy. Good luck in your descision, I am sure you will be pleased with the boat!
