Member Posts: 921 Location: Manitowoc, WI | Just wanted to share a very great experience I had the other day. I volunteered to teach a local cub scout pack a few rules of the road about fishing. The requirement was for them to be able to identify 5 different types of fish, name some basic fishing rules and of course, safety. I also brought a couple of rod and reel combos along for them to test their casting skills. Let me tell you this, I was elated by the looks on their faces, their attentiveness to learn about fishing and suprised at the casting skills demonstrated by most of them. Some of these 4 to 7 yr olds never touched a pole in their lives. I actually stayed until it was getting dark to teach the basic casting techniques with an open faced reel. These kids were great and wanted very much to learn what I had to teach them. I will definitely do this again. I found this to be very rewarding and would encourage anyone with the time to do something like this. Remember, these kids are the ones that will be keeping this sport going well into the future. Member Posts: 591 Location: in the boat off the east shore somewhere | Outstanding! i had a chance to do something similar last year... most of the kids were a bit into fishing and already had there own riggs , it was a small durbi for kids but on by the local hunting club.. i wasnt sure how to approach it but there were a few things that went over big! there were about 40 kids involved, if you do something like this and can spare 100.00 bill or if not fine but things like a steel leader for the pike you can catch in smaller lakes and rivers and a good old fashon dare devel knock off go along way ,,, i showed these kids the basics on slip bobbers.. something i dint use as a kid and this is where i got the most milage as most parents didnt know how to rig them up,,, so grab some split shots and some slipperys and show them how to tie up,,, show them how to poke the hole on top of the bobber a bit larger to let some of the heavy duty line that they use on your typical combo rod and reel threw smoothly for long casts. we spent about a half hour each got a bobber a few spare knots a few split shots and they tied there own along with me.... we sent them on there way and they fished there little derbi for the day.... worked great they were fishing a river with very little current ,, but depth changes all over the place , ill bet 80 percent of the parents came up to me after and thaught it was the best invention since sliced bread and though some knew of the basic system never used it or didnt show there kids how yet... the biggest thing was the comments from the folks that did it the year before and how this saved them a lot of headaches from snaggs and the massive amount of gut hooked fish and bullheads , you dont have to put on a superPRO clynic to give these kids some idias ,, just get them started and they will do the rest..... and yes its always a great feeling to show a few kids some key fishing tips , but a troop like above or a larger group,, its not as hard as you think ,,, these kids are sharp as a whip and they will hang on your every word,,,, HORSHACK... i like the way you mixed in the safety ,,, i should have thrown in a bit of that ,,, ill remember next time.... good work !

Member Posts: 591 Location: in the boat off the east shore somewhere | OH i forgot a couple things.. i got a deal from the local bait and tackle on these goodies... and nail clippers are cheep at the local dollar store.... but the hooks i baught were LONG shank ,,, give the kids something to grab when they remove the hook from a fish... tying a simple fishing knot and testing it... and also after i spent the money i went to the local piggly wiggly.... got them to sponsor the gift bag along with a deal at the local bait shop... both had rubber stamps and the bag was stamped at the bait shop and i stamped all the slip bobbers with the piggly wiggly stamp,,, so if you see a slipry bobber out there with a piggly wiggly logo on it ,,, you know where it came from... also the local news paper mentioned them as sponsors... so you dont have to foot the bill on this gift package if you make another stop or two at a local buisness ,,,
