got the ice gear out ... just tinkiring a bit... and i have tip ups from great grampa and grampa a dad...  i have alway used my great gramps the ones my father used before me... i have gotten new ones over the years bit the few times i set up tip ups i always go old school...  there the teeter totter type. with a weight that slids on a rail along the top.. they work great... but  i also have a couple older versions of them and also two my grampa made many many years ago.  they were made with a mouse trap for a trigger... a stand and a plank running straight up and down .. attached to the plank the moustrap and the flag was attached to the thing on a rod so when the moustrap sprung the flag snaps strait up with it ..  there cool .. i knocked the dust off and cleaned them up ,, you can tell they were made with care...  i have decided to use them all this year . im going vintage and leaving the rest at home...  even have a couple wooden wind jammers that though i cant stand them im going to set em up too... looks like there home made too... but not sure ..  i have about 12 total old school rigs to restore .   does anyone else go oldschool or has it all been replaced with beaver dam, polar, frabil and the such...? i never do well with the tip ups like the old days but im looking forward to punching some holes as these things bring back some good memories....   i know even with all the new on the market nothing could match the teeter totter ones to this day . anyone else have old ones that seem to outperform the new?

its funny how i remember as a kid the sound of the weight sliding down the metel rail and CLINK! when it stopped at the bottom as the flag stood straight up... these mousetrap deals slap hard when sprungand also make a distint sound.. though i havent heard one in action on the ice yet... not exactly looking forward to hard water but a little sanding and re-finishing and some new hardware here and there and ill have some old school toys all hand made ready to go into action... kinda pumped...

No way, this is a great post. Do you have any pictures of the old gear? We would love to see the tip ups and ingenuity it took to build them, can you take pictures and post them? IceFIRST fires up in late November as far as the traffic goes, but there's no worries having the info in both places!

yes ill get some picks ,,, and post .. i have been using the old ones for all my years ,, the six at least ,,, and im gonna make more myself to give to my son..  though the hole can freez up it can be fixed by a cover . but the reason i like these tip ups is a fish can mouth the minow pull it down a couple inches and the thing with no resistance will pull the minow back up off the bottom when the fish lets go... works great for perch on baggo and walleyes too.. but i havent been able to find a good tip up bite on the lake for a long time... ill set one of each back up on my workbench and take some pictures... there just cool... and i guess the fact that grandpa and great grandpa made them ,, heck i think its possible that some are 100 years old... im 40 and i know my 6 favorits are the same six my dad took me out on the lake with since i was 2  he said they were great granpas... who at the time was about 75  so they might be 100 years old... long line of carpenters in the family..
