The rain and warm temps have degraded the ice in some areas on Winnebago:

Two men rescued after breaking througth thin ice on Lake Winnebago

Tho men were taken to Mercy Medical Center Thursday afternoon after they broke through the ice while riding ATVs on Lake Winnebago.

The Oshkosh Fire Department was dispatched at 11:40 a.m. Thursday on a report that at least one person had fallen through the ice near the Fugelberg Park boat landing on Oshkosh’s south side.

The men were taken to shore by the department’s air boat. One man walked to an ambulance, but the other had to be moved to the ambulance on a stretcher.

Both men were transported to Mercy Medical Center, but no information was available about either man's condition.

A witness, Don Roeder, said he saw the men riding four-wheel ATVs north, toward thin ice that extends out from the mouth of the Fox River, when they broke through the ice.

“I couldn’t figure out why they were going that way,” Roeder said.

Fire department spokesman John Holland said the men were more than 200 yards offshore when they broke through about 2 inches of ice.

“They were out on some shaky ice,” Holland said.

The Northwestern will update this story as more information becomes available.

This is the area where the river flows, when the river enters winnebago it flows south....not straight into the lake. People should ask if they don't know the lake..

I was out yesterday and the ice was surprisingly good off of Ceape straight out. The least ice I could find was 10". I walked out over 2 miles, BAD IDEA! Now the snow should help foot travel, but yesterday it was brutal once the ice started to sweat! I am a little sore, but I managed some nice Perch, a few Whitebass, and a small Walleye. Would've loved to move around more, but that became a chore on foot!

I agree, these guys who had a problem were not regulars, locals, or what ever you want to call them. There are always a few that just do not seem to get it.
