Walked out well before sunrise this morning. Fished structure adjacent to some deeper water, 11'-16'. Marked quite a few fish early - only landed a few smaller perch & 1 really nice perch just shy of 11". Also lost a really nice fish without even seeing it (I'm guesing it was an eye -- lawyers never shake off). By 10am the fish had moved on, just about the time AvgJoe showed up Coincidence?

I'm starting to get pretty frustrated out there. I think there is a strong forage base down there this winter and they're not too interested in what we've got to offer. Hopefully, we'll get some good ice soon so I can drive out and move around more freely to find some more active fish.

I fished a little while after Bob left and then relocated off Fugelberg, in front of the coke plant. I caught three keeper perch - 2 of them were really nice ones. All on minnow/jig or minnow/tip ups, none on waxies. Oh, and, go Pack!

Some of my friends were out in the Payne's point area yesterday morning. Even with all the runoff the water is very clear. They could see their minnows in 17' of water. I think if it clouds up a little the fishing will get better.

This year for ice fishing, I really got off the "main basin" pattern. I just got sick of all the driving, drilling, checking, and having to have a great day just to get a meal. And the worst part is: even if you do find fish, the next day/week/year they probably won't be there. Instead, I have been focusing on panfish and what a major improvement my fishing has taken. I have been out 4 Saturdays, on 4 different lakes, and have done well all 4 times. My freezer is full and I have caught hundreds of fish this year. I'm not trying to brag, just saying that if you enjoy catching fish, maybe try focusing on crappie/bluegill/perch areas or even a different lake altogether. The other advantage to fishing these areas is that the fish will be in the same general area next year, and most likely next week. The walleyes will get easier to catch come late ice, but in the meantime, grab a map and take a drive to a new area and try it- you'll have way more fun.

Thanks for the input.

Pattern wise, I realize the low light periods are usually good times for walleye fishing. Do you think too many folks are stuck in that June pattern,ie, trollin or drift until you find em? Which makes it all that difficult in the winter.

I have had some success, not a pattern, yet, fishing the deeper edges near reefs. I kinda stick to the theory that fish move to shallows and herd baitfish. Now, if there are a ton of baitfish in the water, no need to herd. Which may be happening in winnebago.

Good advice Dave. I've fished some lakes to the west with better succes in past years. So far this year my time has been pretty limited and I've avoided the drive and fished close to home -- that leaves Bago. I need to get out that way again.

Dave, I can't agree with you more. I "gave up" on ice fishing 'Bago years ago. Started to explore the other lakes around the area and can't say I miss 'Bago one bit during the ice season. The walks are shorter during early ice. the fishing is better, most of the time. and yep, repeatable. Find 'em this year, and they will be there next year. Only thing different is year classes.

Still like going upnort' too for ice fishing.
