I want to know where all you walleye guys consider to be the best place in the nation to catch walleyes? I know that I love the Lake Winnebago system, but I want your opinion. Please tell me what you think.....

I've been lucky enough to have visited quite a few places in the US and Canada that I really liked for walleyes (maybe not as many places as some of you) but I'm with Juls on this one. Lake Erie has my vote.

Hard to say... Winnebago and Green Bay including the Bay De Noc area are great places to fish...But I still think Erie is at the top of the list...But if we are talking size... nothing is even close to Quinte in the fall for big fish.Paul

I've been to Lake Erie when it's good, I've been to lake Erie when it's not so good. If you want to catch fish til you're bored of reeling in fish go to some good walleye lake in Canada.

If you want size, I've seen Erie good, but Green Bay could give it a run on the right days, key word being the "right days" for both bodies of water.

edit to add:
Oh nation......well Canada basically is a US national park ain't it?

The best place in the nation? Anchored right next to Shep, of course.

I haven't been to enough places to say, but if I could go to one new place, I'd love to go to the Columbia River or Quinte.

I would say the Neshkoro Mill Pond. It is the best kept secret this side of the Miss.

When you get tired of trolling, go to Vilas and Oneida counties, Wisconsin. A cornucopia of varied lakes and rivers with walleye numbers and size. Pick the right water for any season.

hehehe Dave, you make me chuckle!

I would love to fish Quinte, in fall.

This is such a time dependant question.

I really love Erie in the spring, late May is awesome.

But then Green Bay is a lot of fun in early summer.

Bago chain is good up until August for me. I had one of the greatest times last Father's day, fishing Poygan with my daughter.

I really need to spend some more time on Bays de Noc. Never seem to have the time in the fall, though.

After all is analyzed, I guess Green Bay keeps me in a bigger boat. You can have 60 fish days, and average 4 pounders, or you may have a 5 fish day, and average 8-10!

sheer numbers....thats easy.

Upper Red Lake is hand down the best lake to go catch 100 fish in a day....for now anyway.

Want size better make it a Great Lake.

Once again, Lake Erie hands down, any month of the year can produce huge numbers of walleye and lots of hogs, I agree with Shep, May is one of my favorite months for sure. The fish are going bananas that time of year.

Columbia River between Washington and Oregon near the Mcnary Damm in the months of Feb. or March. 16# is not uncommon!

Lets see, I just looked over the Western Ohio Walleye Club's tournament schedule for next year so I am hoping it is CJ Brown Reservoir in May, Tappan Lake in June, Alum Creek in July, Buckeye Lake in Sept. and Indian Lake in October. I will let you all know if any of those turn out to be the "Best Place in the Nation".

Any and all tips or pointers will be welcome at anytime!

I would love to learn the Columbia river! BIG Fish!
Then again there are lots of virgin waters in Canada that would make one's mouth water!
Good Luck

The Detroit River near the Trenton Channel from April to the end of May can produce daily limit catches with an excellent chance to catch 8-10 lb 'eyes. From May into July, the western basin of Lake Erie off of the Fermi Nuclear Plant heats up, with tons of fish caught off the many underwater humps and reefs. Another area that has been a hotbed for walleye's in the Detroit area is the St. Clair River delta area near Harsen's Island and to the north by Algonac and Marine City(this is on the north end of Lake St. Clair). Frequent limit catches are taken in the St. Clair River, but usually of a smaller size than in Lake Erie and the Detroit River.
