Member Posts: 319 | The thing to watch for is the treatment facility. "But Natural Resources Board Chairman Christine Thomas of Stevens Points said that if onshore ballast treatment is going to be explored, it should done at a gateway port to the Great Lakes. "Letting ships wander the length of the Great Lakes and then dealing with the problem in Duluth and Superior makes no sense to me," she said." This has to be the truest statement. If done wrong this will be a useless exercise and an enormous waste of money.

Member Posts: 185 Location: Port Washington, wisconsin | Not only that, but treating ships needs to be done at there expense, not ours. Need a big ol' toll booth at the Great lakes entry way. Pay, clean, and go. Or even better, put it on truck.

Member Posts: 319 | In all honesty, this should be done at the national level at the port of entries to the Great Lakes system. The way I read it is we are going to be paying for this, nothing is said about re-covering any money from the shipping industry, just that the DNR is going to spend 6 million or so. I sure hope they are thinking this one through.

Member Posts: 1656 | We are gonna pay for it one way or the other. Either directly or indirectly as the costs would get passed on to the consumers in the form of shipping costs. That part doesn't bother me. I agree that there could be more effective ways to implement, but dealing with international issues along with state issues. I'll take this, better than nothing at all.

Member Posts: 319 | I agree. It could be worse. At least it won't be an honor system on the part of the ships.
