New boat question![]() |
| ||
Anyone here have any experience with the 1785 Yar-craft. I'm lookng to downsize to a smaller boat with a 115 4 stroke Yamaha and a T8 for trolling on the Bay of Green bay and the bago system. No Salmon or Musky, just Walleye trolling. Thanks

How does it handle rough water (not crazy waves just normal bago) Is there enough room behind the seat to mount 3 rod holders on rails on each side. Is there enough room to mount a T-8 kicker if so which side should you mount the kicker on. Is there enough room in front of the drivers seat for you feet. It looks like the storage compartment has a 3 inch lip on the bottom that you would hit with your feet. How may rods can you fit in the rod locker. The trailer I'm looking at does not have brakes.... all my other trailers have had brakes... How does this boat/trailer stop with a Explorer. Is there enough room on the dash to mount 2 5" lowrance units on Ram mounts. Has your boat held up well over the years. Thanks

Member Posts: 132 Location: Southwest shore Bago | I have had mine for fourteen years I think. It has had the the transom replaced and the interior completely. It is a 1981! I wont get rid of it because I love it's ride and fishability. I live on Winnebago so it is used alot. The boat is loaded with fishing gear including three batteries kicker gas tank three anchors etc. Plenty of room for all your questions. I would think your truck would handle it just fine without brakes. I've been in it on the worst waves Bago has to offer. I wouldnt want to be in any other boat and I have been in many different boats. I recommend it. ![]()

Member Posts: 617 Location: Oshkosh, Wisconsin | "How does it handle rough water (not crazy waves just normal bago) " As well as any 17 foot boat I have ever been in. I was very happy with how smooth the ride was in my 1998 1785 Yar-craft. "Is there enough room behind the seat to mount 3 rod holders on rails on each side. " Yes, I don't think that is an issue. I would suggest rod holders that you can adjust the angle (height), but if you do that, I don't think you'll have any issues. "Is there enough room to mount a T-8 kicker if so which side should you mount the kicker on. " I had a 9.9 Merc 4-stroke on the passenger side of the boat. I've seen others with the kicker on the drivers side. I don't believe this makes as much difference on this hull as it is very stable when under power. Some of the bigger boats are MUCH more weight sensitive than my 1785 was. "Is there enough room in front of the drivers seat for you feet. It looks like the storage compartment has a 3 inch lip on the bottom that you would hit with your feet. " I'm only 5'8" but I never had a problem with foot space. "How may rods can you fit in the rod locker." I used plastic rod socks to keep the rods from tangling. I HIGHLY recommend using some form of rod sock. With a minimal amount of effort, I could store 8 trolling rods (8'6" ers) or 6 trolling rods and 4 jig sticks. You had to take most of them out to get to the rod at the bottom of the box, but how long does it take to pick up and move 8 rods? "The trailer I'm looking at does not have brakes.... all my other trailers have had brakes... How does this boat/trailer stop with a Explorer. " I pulled mine with an explorer for a few years. Shouldn't be an issue stopping. If anything, you may need to watch the tongue weight. Mine sat too far forward on the trailer and caused the Explorer to squat a bit. That's a easy fix if you take a little bit of time to address it. "Is there enough room on the dash to mount 2 5" lowrance units on Ram mounts." Yes, but it will be crowded. I had two units on mine as well, both were mounted to the right of the dash, just ahead of the throttle arm. The dash itself (behind the windshield) wasn't big enough for electronics in my opinion. "Has your boat held up well over the years. " Yes, very well. I sold mine last fall and HATED to see it go. After 9 seasons on 'bago and green bay, it had a few spider cracks in the gel coat, but the hull was as solid as the day I bought it. I sold mine because I want a bigger boat. The 1785 yarcraft was a great boat, but there is a pretty big difference between the ride in a great 17 foot boat and even an average 20 footer. I'm not sure what your used to, but inch for inch, I think you'll be happier in a 17 foot Yar-craft than just about any other 17 foot hull out there.

Member Posts: 57 | I have a 2000 1785 with a 2002 115 4Stk. I will say that you won't break any speed records but I get about 38 out of it on he GPS. I am 5'11'' and the seeting behind the wheel is a bit tight at times but all in all not bad. I have rails monted on my boat and have three rod holders per side and it works great. I also have one on each side up in the bow. There is a storage compartment under the dash that works well for things you don't use very often. The storage compartment along side of the driver is very nice and holds alot of gear. We carry exactly the same amount of rods as mentioned above. I also added a Tite-Lok four rod vertical rack along the back for carrying rods while running. As for electronics you will probably have to put them on ram mounts and have one over top of the other, unless you are going with the new hull design where the windsheild is straighter. I have the "bubble" style. The front comprtments are really big. We put a plug in the front live well and use that for life jacket and planner boards ect. That way if anything is wet we can put it in there nd dry it out when we get home. As for handleing in rough water it handles very well. I run my on Lake Erie and Saginaw Bay just about all summer long. I actually made a ninteen mile run last year on Saginaw Bay in six foot waves at time and it handeled well. I would not recoment this though. I do not have a kicker right now but am looking at putting on a engine mount trolling motor this year but have not made up my mind.
