Subject: painting fiberglass

Hi everyone,

I have an old "ugly white yarcraft" that has seen its fair share of yellowing over time. Despite how desireable it would be to own a new rig, the boat is still quite serviceable. (plus, I am not made of money to be able to afford a new boat!) I intend on replacing the interior carpeting this summer and having the trailer sandblasted and repainted. I have pondered the idea of giving the hull a little color with a glitter-style paint. I have some marginal experience with painting boats with decent success, but these have all been aluminum. The paint I have found so far is more of an automotive enamel made by Plasti-Kote. My thought was to turn an all-white hull into a more mid-1990's era Yar Craft with a band of color down each side on the top of the hull.

Have any of you ever painted a fiberglass boat before and is this something you would recommend doing? I would also add a clear top coat for added gloss and durability. In addition to this, do any of you know of a paint that has more of a metal flake content (so it stands out more), or is there a better way of doing what I want to do without painting? Thanks for any advice you can offer!

I can't help with the painting project, but I'm a big fan of STAR BRITE boat polish. It comes in a white bottle with a gold and black label. The product contains teflon and really seemed to help bring the color back into my brother's 1970's cabin cruiser (lake michigan fishing boat). You might consider trying a product like that to see if it can bring a bit of color back to your rig before you break out the can of spray paint.

If you do decide to paint the boat, please let me know how that goes.

How many bottles of "elbow grease" does this usually require? I thought that once I tried Star Bright with minimal results...

On a side note, I found a guy in SE Wisconsin who does fiberglass/gelcoat repair, and he is able to apply polyflake to the fiberglass. I do not know what this will run, but I will find out and pass it on.

On a worser side note, my big engine is not passing water and she's overheating... guess I won't be playing bumper boat on the Wolf tomorrow like I thought...
