First time glass boat owner and need to add some flush mount rod holders. Need 1 5/8" hole. From other posts i have seen, it appears that i should use a 1 3/4" hole saw first and drill slowly backwards - then saw the 1 5/8" hole. I'm i understanding this right? Thanks for your help.

That will work to minimize chipping the gelcoat. go just deep enough to get through the gel layer, and then switch to the smaller size. Because the mount will cover up the area from the larger saw, you won't have to worry about looks this way.

I don't/haven't done it this way. I always drill the size hole I need. I always put a good masking tape down first, drill the pilot hole, start the hole saw backwards through the gelcoat, and then fisnish the hole. Then I take a rat tail file and champfer the edges of the hole to relive the possibility of the start of stress cracks. Drill slow and steady, and let yu tool do the work. Don't force it, and you won't burn your boat. Don't forget the tape. Very important.

Measure three times, and drill once. Good luck. It gets easier after that first hole in the new boat!

The first hole is always the hardest one.

Have you thought about adding S.S. rails to the gunnels to mount your rod holders on, instead of drilling those large holes?

Remember if you add the rails, this is another place to catch a rod tip and break it. Also, you still have to drill holes for the screws for the rail. I would just use the masking tape and flush mount holders. Good luck.
