I thought our DNR was not going to do any electro shocking/egg taking on the Tittabawassee this spring because of the VHS virus. Well, they did do it last Tuesday, not to take eggs but to assess the health of the fish and to do some tagging. A friend of mine sent me this E-mail tonight. I'm pumped for both the opener in 9 days and what might very well be another record year class from all these rip/healthy females in the system.

“I was just at a meeting and Jim Baker from the DNR was there. They finished their shocking on the tib...3000 fish in record time. The river was chock full (this was last tuesday) of females.

At any rate...the news is that the 2003 year class females are now 20"-21". He said they were all full of eggs and looked like footballs. 10:1 female to male ratio. His thought was that there are actually more males in the system than that...but they generally come up before the females and probably crossed the dam in the high water. He suspected that there were a lot of lonely males up in Sanford.

Speaking of VHS........ I'm VERY happy, along with you Dan. After all the walleye and near 90% of the 4#+ smallies I caught last year with obvious VHS infections, I have yet to see one fish floating this spring! :) I was really worried after this long winter, but it looks like mother nature gave them immunity!
