Sorry if the question has been asked before. I will be heading up to Bay de Noc for the first time this fall! From those of you that have been up there more/fish there often, what is the consensus on the best GPS chip...Lake Master, Navionics? I have a Lowarance unit if that makes any difference.

Westside, it can be a toss up. The LM pro shows more contour lines with depths dropped in in a bunch of places. This can clutter up the screen a bit. The Navionics has less contour lines but as many depth listed, but tend to be scattered around randomly as well as on the contours themselves. If you want, I'll email some screen shots of both from my Lowrance Expedition c. I personally like the Navionics for any lake that I've been on, but the LM chip is better in rivers...showing much more of hump and point size/shape due to it having more contour lines.

I have always used The Navionics chip for BDN, never used the LM but like frog said too many contour lines can be confusing and overkill.

I've always used the Navionics chip and been real happy with it. I bought the Lakemaster chip this year and will try it out this fall, but I think I could be happy with the Navionics one. Now if you want a really good chip you could download all my waypoints and icons onto one and you'd have it. LOL

I have both, and feel that both are good, but I prefer the LM because of the deep structure lines that are shown. It is my opinion that (in the fall) the big girls follow the most direct route to get to shallower structure. The areas that have the quickest, most immediate access to deep (40-50'+) water are often hotspots. And don't be reluctant to take a loop across the deep water to to get back on your run. I've caught a lot of nice fish suspended in water as deep as 80', adjacent to shallower structure, typically 25-30' down, but sometimes as shallow as 10'. Good Luck

Thanks for the opinions. I do already have a LM Wisconsin chip and started playing around with that to see what sort of detail showed up. It seemed pretty good. I was a little surprised as there are other areas closer to home that have little to no detail. I will probably go ahead and use that since I already have it.

Appreciate the tip on the deepwater paths to the shallows. I'm sure Buck Perry would agree.

If you can go out on a charter first and learn the lake. Seen lots of people come up here and not catch anything. I live not to far from the bay and I'm still learning how to catch fish out there. Going out on a charter next tuesday night.

I agree that the guide would be a great idea for the first time up. I am heading up with a group consisting of 5 boats, each with at least two aboard. Most of the guys have been up at least a few times...still not the experience of a local guide that is out day after day but hopefully we will do alright. Part of our plan is to stay in contact and modify tactics if one boat starts doing much better than the rest. Hopefully it won't turn out that the whole group is too bullheaded to try new things and cooperate towards success.

you can go to www.sallmarresort.com and click on fishing reports and discussions and get info on the bay. Check out any old post from Capt Ken or the bait shop guy for good info and what color harnesses are working the best. Will post some pics next wednesday of my charter trip on the bay.

Every time i use a lakemaster i have to work extra hard to decipher where the lower unit nabbers live. lots of contour lines, not many numbers.
