Regional Walleye Fishing -> Winnebago Walleyes -> Winnebago Sauger

Had a full day of fishing with Troy yesterday - which yield a whole boat load of fish - including 3 spieces of bass (but not including whitebass), catfish, bluegill, sheephead, lots of walleye, and one nice 17 3/4 inch sauger!

That first glimpse of this sauger sent me back in time to the 70's, when as a lad I would notice how these strange looking walleyes made my grandfather smile. There was something special for him as he lifted the cover of the icebox to include these fish in the catch. As I think back, one this size surely would have meant a stop at the bar for hamburgers and a beer for him, then quarters for the pinball machine for me!

But as Troy and I celebrated this fish, reality came home and as Troy gingerly handled the fish for a quick picture, my thoughts turned to a fast release hoping this fish was a fertile female who will make the next spawning time with a belly full of future generations of sauger.

As far as the how and where? Sorry, but Troy was pre-fishing for the Merc and I am sure you'll understand why my typing fingers are suddenly curling with cramps!

While fishing in last week's WWA tournament, I caught a small (under 14") sauger in the upper lakes... Maybe they're coming back. Just a bit surprised to catch one where I did...

I heard a fella from Illinois was fishing the weekend before memorial day out of High Cliff. Upon return to the marina the wardens checked him after trailering his boat. He told the young lady (warden) that he had limited out on nice eating size 'eyes. Wrong! He lifted a stringer of five sand pike (sauger). Too bad for him. Sounds like he caught 'em on the sand bars along the north shore, where we used to catch em as kids in the spring. I think they're slowly going to rebound considering all the sand pike I've seen lately were at least 18 inches long and prime for spawning. Time will tell. For your information, I'm still trying to find the warden's report to make sure this wasn't just bar talk.
