Dave, thanks for helping me get away from election coverage, stock prices, and foreign affairs, even for just a little while.

I agree with Dave, none of you should bother fishing any more. More water for me. Serenity now!

Good stories guys. I am always envious of those who had friends and family members that brought them up in the fishing game. Other than going down to the creek to catch rock bass and red horse in my grade school years, I never saw a walleye until I was in my 40s. Oh, so long ago:). With that in mind, I always look forward to summer when my sisters grandson comes to Wi. from MN. and we can fish for a day or two with his grandpa.
My buddy Keger has young grandkids arriving daily, well sort of, and his stories to me relfect the joy he gets from experiencing the outdoors with them.
We are all very lucky to be able to enjoy a sport that allows participation at all levels and the one on one time it affords us.
Take care,
Jim O

My turn,

I grew up around great fisherman, in fact I grew up knowing my Grandpa's were the best.

Trout, walleye, Lakers and Salmon....even Bluegill when the mood struck. One taught me how to catch them, the other a more conservative man taught me to respect them.

As I grew up nothing made me happier to hear one of my Grandpa's brag me up to their friends, the more I tried and learned the more they bragged me up....made me feel so good. After High School I moved from the UP of Michigan to Illinois for school and later work and marriage. Only getting to fish with both when vacation time allowed, which was never enough.

The conservative Grandpa moved to Texas to avoid the snow, and the other was stricken with cancer....twice. The second time he somehow stayed stronger through treatment, and one spring while on vacation visiting him he asked if I wanted to go brook trout fishing with him....I didn't let him finish the sentence.

We loaded up his old truck, stopped at a friends and picked up some crawlers and minnows....this was the "catching" Grandpa after all. On the way he told me where we were going and I knew the spot well. He said "I can't walk for shit anymore, so I will drop you off at the bridge and I will drive down closer to the big log jam below. You fish all the way down and I will meet you at the log jam for lunch."

I wanted to just hang with Gramps, but decided that there was some nice holes on the way and would follow his advice.

I fished the spots that looked likely, with no takers. As I got closer to the area that the log jam would be I slowed down and fished harder, as I couldn't meet him without fish. No takers.

Finally about 2 hours after being dropped off I turned the last bend in the river, and seen Gramps pulling in a nice brookie. When he seen me he smiled a huge toothy grin and said "What took you so long kid, I about got this spot fished out." And true enough, a limit of nice brookies were in his basket. After realizing what had happened.....I had been had by one of the best bait fisherman I have ever met. I laughed at him sending me away from his fish, and told him I will repay the favor someday.

On the way back to town we stopped at a tavern to have a cold beer, this time I got to brag on my Gramps to his buddies.

He passed away shortly after that, and to this day I can't pass that river without hiking to that log jam the long way.

The link below is to what I think is the best album of fishing related music in the world. "Mr. All Science Fisherman" will relate to many.....lol But the song "Pass it On" is a tear jerker. I've listened to that song a 1000 times and it's better each time. Quite a message...to say the least. And well worth the cost of the CD.

Now me,
Just got back from driving my youngest to Texas for his first post college job. While doing the packing I ran across the first tackle box I put together for him when he was just a small scrapper. I opened it, and through teary eyes gazed at the baits and bobbers I had put together for him so many years ago, and realizing that not nearly enough time was spent getting them wet together. For those of you with young guys or gals, they move on faster than you think. Take all the time you can, to take them with you on the water.

Yep, did just that last week. My son, Billy, got his first Lake Erie walleye, and he's hooked more than ever! I know that I've got a "partner for Life!"
