I keep hearing about the phelps floater. Is that a name that become generic (ie kleenex) for the floating jigs from Northland? Or did Northland buy the phelps floater?

Was there ever a phelps tackle?

I always considered the gumdrop floater the phelps floater. There are a number of floaters out there, but a lot spin and such. Northland floaters are my favorite.

There is a Phelps Tackle, run by Mike and Matt Phelps the sons of the founder. Looks like their website is down but I have a phone number, 218-586-2953.

The Phelps Floaters are designed with curve to keep the hook turned up and they don't spin like some other models.

Here's a pic of a Phelps Wobbler

Thats a new product "from the makers of phelps floaters". What does the phelps floater look like then? Phone # is dead.

Try Bluewater Bait in Bemidji, MN. Phelps is (was?) a Bemidji based company and they carry phelps ice fishing tackle on Bluewater's website.

I believe the Northland "gum drop" jig originally was made by the Phelps tackle company and Northland bought the rights to produce them. Back in the nineties, I purchased jigs from Northland on a bubble-pack card which were labeled "phelps floaters" I think that there was a time limit on use of the Phelps name and Northland had to start calling them gum drop jigs. I've been referring to them as "phelps floaters" ever since buying them as such even though they were merchandised by Northland.

yes there was. Phelps tackle was out of Bemidji Mn (as is northland) but has fallen off the radar. Cabelas used to carry them as did blue water bait. I don't know what ever happened to them. They were better than the Northland variety if you ask me.

Where did they go?

Hello All! I appreciate all the talk about the Phelps Floater and our other products. Phelps Tackle Company is still alive and kickin'. We(I) am based out of Bemidji. My father invented the original Phelps Floater in I believe 1980 and did have a deal (a crappy one) with northland to let them use the name and make the product. Them using the name ended about nine years ago or so.
A few years ago we developed the Wobbler Floater and a Weedless Floater called the SpongyBug. The Wobbler was available in Cabela's but as of now is not for a couple different reasons.
My father passed away a couple years ago now. After that, I tried to keep up with all facets myself, production, sales, billing, marketing, ect. Well, i finally got burned out and took a step back from the business and just tried to keep it running on a smaller scale. I am now slowly trying to get things back on track. It is difficult for a variety of reasons. Financial, time, and being only one of me. I do not have a website up as of now, but as someone said before, most of our ice fishing tackle is available on the Bluewater Bait website out of Bemidji. I have a catalog with order form I can mail out with the other info in it if anyone is interested. My phone number is a cell phone. It is 218-766-3818. Leave a message if I don't answer. My email is [email protected]
Thank you all for being "fans" of the Phelps Floater and for your inquiry. Have a great day.

Matt Phelps
