Member Posts: 885 | One of my duck hunting buddies has 7 black and 3 yellow labs for sale. $275-$300 I've hunted over the mom for several years and she is a great dog. The mom has won over 50 field trials and is an excellent hunting dog. The parents are both around 75 lbs. The pups are 3 weeks old. If you have any interest, shoot me an pm or post here and I'll get you picks and his number. Dominic

What kind of field trials? UKC hunt tests or AKC Retriever trials?

Member Posts: 3899 | Well, if it "won", it would be a Field Trial. Hunt tests, there are no winners, correct? You don't win a hunt test, you finish it. I'm pretty sure there has never been a dog that has won anywhere close to 50 AKC Field trials, but I could believe a dog finished more than 50 hunt tests. That is not to say that dogs that run hunt tests are inferior. Hunt tests are not nearly as political as Field Trials, and they set up more realistics situations. When was the last time you were duck hunting, ans some schmuck in a white coat was out there where the birds fall? If my Blue wasn't only 5, I'd be interested. I love Lab puppies! Get some pics up here.

Member Posts: 885 | Heck... I'm not even sure how you tell a Black Lab from a Yellow Lab !! That last question is way above my pay grade. If you are interested... call Jim. All I can tell you is his Female yellow lab is a great dog to hunt over and if I had a place for one of his dogs, I would already have one. Dominic

AKC retriever trials aren't political , THEY ARE HUGELY EXPENSIVE and out of reach of anybody not willing to spend 15,000 to 30,000 dollars per month on training and a bird "kill" bill.. If this Lab won or placed in 50 AKC retriever trials there would be NO WAY THESE pups would be advertised here! With 50 AKC 1st place wins in Retriever trials , this dog would be odds on favorite to make the Retriever Hall of Fame with LAb great, "RIVER OAKS CORKY".

Member Posts: 3899 | $15-30K per month? Who gets that? When I was doing it back in the 80's the going rate was $400-600 per month, + expenses. I got a pretty good deal with my trainer, and he didn't charge me fully for expenses. He knew I couldn't afford it, but he liked my dog. And me, too, I guess. He did get her on the Derby list. Funny dog, as she was an "Alpha" female. Spent all that time on the truck with males, she would lift her leg to pee! But a great marker, and hunter. Maybe political was not correct, but certainly the judging was more subjective because you had to find a winner and places. Hunt tests are much more objective. That's all I am saying.

To Shep: Call up Nilo Kennels and see how much it costs to campaign and train a "major Circuit " retriever. With ducks going for 25.00 or more and pheasants going for 15.00, plus pigeons, you can run up a 4-5 digit monthly bird bill in no time at all. To put a competing competitive retriever on the field trial circuit with a "Major stakes trainer", it is an expense only a few people can afford. Call around and try to get a top bred puppy from parents winning and placing on the major stakes retriever field trial circuit and see how far you get. You will have to show the breeder your W2s and then commit you first born just the the opportunity to pay the 1000.00 to 2000.00 for a competition LAB puppy. Heck, 400-600 won't get your dog trained even to be a hunter in the pointing dog training world. I have well over 65 placements in 30 years in the horseback AKC and American Field pointing dog trials and with none of them in the "TOP" events and it cost me 5,000 in entries and expenses last year just to run 1 dog in the regional circuits with no championships or classics. 40.00 to 50.00 dollars per entry time 2 entries per weekend in the pointing breed trials where you can't see your competition or the other dogs unless you have your own horse or are prepared to pay 100.00 per day to rent one which most of the time aren't available. I figure my AKC judging card cost me at least 40,000 over 10 active years to get the credentials just to be a bird dog judge. To put my highly competitive dog(s) with a competitive pointing dog pro to run the circuit would set me back another 5,000 if I couldn't do it myself. Let's just say I have the training ability, the field trial grounds and a own a horse to give the pros fits when I show up to a trial. When you start talking about the AKC retriever trials, the Field trial Larbrador people are in a financial world of their own. Don't kid yourself, Golden retrievers and Cheasapeak Retrievers are a non factor at AKC retriever trials.

Member Posts: 3899 | I know it's a rich man's game. But, wow, the price has gone up. And I also agree that Corky was one of the best. Certainly better than the robots they have out there now. The dogs today have no character, IMO. All collar dogs, they can do the work, but they don't have the charisma of a Corky, Honcho, Pic, and the likes from the 80's and before.. Even Super Tanker, who was a great dog, didn't have as much pizazz as those mentioned. My Max was the first to have a Tanker litter, and those pups all sold for $700 ea back in '85. So I don't think the price of pups has gone up nearly as much as the training. So waht is the base cost w/o the bird bill? And who mentioned chessies or goldens. Not me.
