I'm thinking of adding a kicker to my 1750 Fishhawk for trolling, and looking for opinions / suggestions.
I'm not looking for something to keep me out in 2-4 footers (I'll head for dock before taking on more than I need to for a fish). Just something to keep me in the 1.0 - 2.0 mph range without adding a ton of weight and spending a ton of money.
I've seen some good deals on 4-strokes in the 4-6hp range... Would a 4hp 4 stroke work for me in the above setting? I also like the idea of the 4hp since it has the built-in tank (can also tie into main gas line) and I could use it on my jon boat too.

I use an evinrude 8hp 4 stroke with a pro troll tied into main fuel line on my 1750 Fishhawk. I love it and wouldn't go much smaller. I use it to troll cranks in the spring and 3-ways in the summer. Love it!! A 6 hp should be fine though. Good Luck!!

Have you considered a 24 volt transom mount electric for the job?

I've been doing a bit of thinking / planning for that idea now too.... I'm just going to keep my eyes open for now on what's out there.

Here's a picture of Chuck Norris's boat, not sure which one is the kicker!

Yup, that's obviously Chuck's boat based on the show room condition of it. He only uses once in awhile to cross Bago when the algae bloom is heavy because it is so much slower than swimming across for him.

I had a 4hp 4stroke Yamaha on my 17'8" Skeeter, that boat is quite a bit heavier than yours, and that kicker worked fine for trolling, the motor was super light and the built in fuel tank is nice also, could troll all day on about a half gallon of gas.

A 4 or 6hp 4 stroke will probably be plenty to push that boat at those speeds but how strong is the mount? I've never seen a 4hp motor with a bracket strong enough to handle the pounding it will take while tilted up and going WOT with your big motor.

For safetys sake don't use the same gas tank for your kicker and your big motor. If you have gas problems now both of your motors are useless.

I wouldn't "t" into your existing gas line unless you have a shut-off installed. Big engine will suck gas from the easiest place to get it and that could be back out of your kicker.

I'd suggest using the smallest 2 cylinder engine you can find. Small engines like 4 and 6 hp ones typically have only 1 cylinder and they tend to run a little rough at slow speeds.

If you are buying new, The mercury 8 hp is a great choice at about 1800 dollars. If looking used it will be hard to find long shafts in the 4-6 range, but they will work just fine, dont let these snobs "chuck norris you" into thinking trolling only takes place with 9.9 and stuff like that. after all, that 1750 will only take so much big waves and if just a little strappage is used, you will never break the brackets before you break your own arse.

I never strapped my 9.9 on my Lund 1700 Angler SS. Then, before the Merc in 05, I decided I should. I strapped it down, and on SUnday, when I unstrapped it to use it, it almost fell off the boat! The motor mount on the side it leaned to broke. I am convinced that strapping it down caused this. If you strap it down, make sure it is sitting cenetered.

Thanks for the tips and suggestions guys.
I decided to put the kicker off for a while due to budget constraints, and will keep things "as-is".
