Member Posts: 68 Location: Suamico, Wisconsin | The tournament field for the 2009 event has filled. It only took five days to fill all 100 available team slots with the bulk of them arriving in the first two days. I've attached a copy of the teams along with their team number. I'm looking forward to the event. Karl Attachments ---------------- ![]()

Will there be 2 flights this year? The reason I ask is because the last few years the teams with the higher boat numbers always have less fishing time.

I agree, looks like post mark means nothing! Funny how we almays end up on the bottom of the pile with less time to fish!

I want to address the boat numbers. I received a phone call from a entrant that stated his team (2 boats) sent in their entries on the postmark date. Again this year (same as the last 2 years) their boat numbers are #80 or better. Randy, can you explain why they consistently get a high boat numbers? A suggestion: Split the field and give the second half an additional 20 minutes just like you enjoyed in the MWC at Marinette. (Just a suggestion) Dave in GB

Member Posts: 3899 | I never said I was retired from all tourneys. Just that this tourney is too much fun. As for the boat number, I really don't care. Most years, we've had low numbers. And when you look at it, he does say receiceved no earlier than the 12th. I miled on the 12th. This has gotten to e a pretty popular event, so more teams are sending in right away. I do wish they would consider splitting the field. It's a long wait from checkin to weigh in. Edited by Shep 3/21/2009 11:45 AM

Guys we certainly appreciate the comments. Unfortunately as long as Karl and I run and fish the tournament there will be only one flight. We are the last boat down the river every year and one of the first boats at the dock to get things ready for the weigh-in. If you look at the results from previous years, there is no correlation to top finishers being in the first 20 or 30 boats. As the tournament has grown we have learned also and made changes. In 2008 we formed two lines of boats down the river to speed up the time it takes to get to the mouth of the river. Changes already in place for next year. Next year all entries will be held until a week after the due date before we draw boat numbers. They will then be pulled out of a hat based on the earliest legal post mark first. Unfortunately we've learned that in some cases it takes 4 or 5 days for entries to arrive. Hard to believe, but I guess it happens. Therefore your entry has time to get to us prior to drawing boat numbers. If it shows up after the drawing with an earlier postmark, too bad. If that concerns you, take it to a post office and have them guarantee next day delivery. It will cost you an extra $1 or so. Regarding boat numbers, it is strictly a random draw. If there are additional questions, contact Karl or myself directly and we can address them for you.

Member Posts: 3899 | Randy, Thanks for taking the time to 'splain a few things. Just so you know, I really don't care what my boat number is. It's just a fun tournament to fish. So much so, that it drew me out of retirement! I only hope I don't create a media frenzy when my rig shows up for the pre-tourney meeting in the morning. I don't want to take attention away from you and Karl, and the rest of the field. My only suggestion for splitting the field is not to get more angling time, but to have less time waiting for weigh in. When all boats are there at the same time, it is an awfully long wait if you got a high number(like 99!). That's my only reason. See you all there!

Shep, You know I usually ask those teams with big weights to wait to the very end to weigh in. Maybe the fishing gods are trying to tell you and Jerry something. I think your concerns are legit. It's something Karl and I will talk about for next year. By the way Karl and I will be riding next to you on the way out. We can talk then. See you on the water. Thanks for the feedback.

Sorry Randy but you are making a mistake. There is no justifiable reason not to have 2 flights. Probably one of the biggest arguments for it is safety. It doesn't matter how you line the boats up when you have that many leaving at once and all trying to get back at the same time the opportunity for an accident is greatly increased. Not to mention how long boats have to float around the river with fish sitting in their livewells. It is inefficient and creates a huge traffic jam.

This is not the forum that I want to use to discuss this. If you have specific concerns, bring them up at the tournament and we will address them in front of all tournament participants. In the 10 or 15 years Karl and I ran this tournament, we have never been approached regarding any safety concerns. We instituted a no passing no wake policy to the mouth of the river on the way out in the morning. So you have two rows of boats going to the mouth of the river. Boats should be taking off two at a time once outside the bouy. That may be the only area where safety is a concern. If it is, someone should let us know. Regarding your concerns about fish in livewells and the log jam you have described. Have you actually fished in this tournament. The holding area for boats is huge. We weigh boats in from 1 to 100. If you have a high number, go float out in the river away from the dock used to bring boats in. If you are boat 35, find out where boats 30 through 34 are so you can follow them into the dock. By the way, they will be right in front of you on the way out in the morning. Remember what their boats look like. Since we started using this system 2 years ago, absolutely no "log jams" exist. If you are a high boat number, plan on floating around for about 45 minutes. Your concern about fish in aireated live wells is bogus. First of all it's the second week of May. Second, water temps are somewhere around 60 to 65 degrees. Third, a vast majority of the fish are pulled out of less than 8 feet of water. I could go on and on if you'd like. Last year we weighed about 450 walleyes. The only fish we lost were those that were foul hooked. That included 3 or 4 fish total. The rest were released into the river healthy and ready to go. I truly could see your concern if this tournament was in Mid July or August, but its not. Karl and I will talk about the two flight possibility for next year. The logistics of doing that and the pluses and minuses will be discussed.

Randy, are you going to post the reults on the web? It would be great if you could post the results in the worksheet you have.
